Got mistaken for a cricketer by the staff while checking out of the hotel. Should have dropped my community cricket bowling stats instead of denying it.

But Nazma and the rest of the cabin crew of AI 2971 handled the situation with utmost professionalism, repeatedly checking on me, making sure I was ok, while dealing with the rudeness directed towards them. Respect for those in the profession 🫔. @airindia. n/n.

This is India in 2025 and it’s shameful. The educated urban elite badly needs to introspect on what direction is it moving. One can imagine that this would be a difficult time for the Air India crew…. 14/n.

At some point during the flight, I noticed the name on the badge of the crew member who was handling our section. Nazma. Now it made sense to me why my neighbour had randomly remarked ā€œI don’t like herā€ pointing at her before the take off. 13/n.

The sense of entitlement over the country and its public spaces these people have, to think they can dictate what others eat or not eat, is astounding. 12/n.

It’s ironic how she was complaining about the state of domestic air travel at the beginning of the flight. I wonder if she acts this way on international flights and airlines. Does she create a fuss about her co-passengers consuming meat there too?. 11/n.

As soon as the plane touched down, she made the call again, this time successfully, and told the person on the other end she wants to make a complain with the DGCA and that she will take legal action against the crew for religion and caste-based insult and harassment. 10/n.

Right before the plane was about to land (once the captain had directed the crew to take their places at the landing stations), the woman tried to make phone calls and send messages. No respect for protocol either. 9/n.

She started speaking loudly in Marathi to the man next to me, assuming I didn’t understand the language at all. She couldn’t stand the fact that the crew prioritised the dignity of a person who hadn’t paid for the upgraded seat over her caste pride. 8/n.

The crew politely told her since people were still eating, they couldn’t spray, and that it would be disrespectful to me and an insult of my food preferences. At this point her ego was bruised. 7/n.

The moment I finished the meal, she pressed the call button to have my tray cleared. But the tantrum didn’t end there. She now wanted air-freshener sprayed. The ā€œI’m a Brahminā€ rant continued. If only she could have asked for gangajal to be sprinkled!. 6/n.

Once she got a napkin, she started pressurising the crew to clear the trays if the meal was done. I was clearly still eating. On the second time, the crew member checked with me rhetorically if I was still eating. I affirmed. The pestering didn’t stop. 5/n.

She appeared to be asleep when we were served our meals but woke up moments later and asked the crew for something to cover her nose with. The reason? I had opted for a chicken meal and she couldn’t stand the (non-existent) smell of ā€œnon-vegā€ as she was a Vaishnav, a Brahmin. 4/n.

Learning that I had been upgraded from economy without a charge annoyed her further. She was rude to the crew, even cussed at them, when informed she couldn’t be moved to business. She went as far as to say that they ā€œdeserved to dieā€ after referring to the recent tragedy. 3/n.

When I arrived on my seat, the woman on the adjoining window seat expressed her disappointment at the seat next to her now being occupied to the person she was on call with. She was frustrated that her upgrade to business class wasn’t processed by the airline. 2/n.

I was ā€œupgradedā€ to a middle seat in premium economy from my preferred last row window by #AirIndia on my Delhi-Pune flight yesterday. What followed was a 2-hour-long exhibition of the ā€œdowngradeā€ of the moral fabric of the Indian society. Of casteism, classism & Islamophobia. 🧵.
