The measles outbreak in the Northern Arizona community of Short Creek -- a former fundamentalist Mormon stronghold -- is showing no signs of slowing. Just on the Arizona side of the Utah border, cases are nearing 100. From @morgfisch: https://t.co/UJgKj6Gutr

In @phoenixnewtimes' cover story this week, I uncovered how Short Creek's storied history is impacting its present as measles plays out in the community's health clinic, schools and more. Pick up a copy or read it at https://t.co/2BjN5WJFCf.

But his influence is far from gone. As measles has exposed, it’s there in Short Creek’s low vaccination rates — a result of Jeffs’ distrust of outside medical professionals and, in turn, Creekers’ post-Jeffs suspicion of anyone trying to exert control over their lives.

For a century, Colorado City was a stronghold of the FLDS, a polygamous offshoot of the Mormon Church. But in the early 2000s, the area became infamous under the cult-like control of FLDS leader Warren Jeffs. Since Jeffs' incarceration in 2011, the community has changed a lot.

Earlier this month, I traveled to a community along the Utah-Arizona border, where the state's largest measles outbreak in three decades is brewing. But Short Creek isn't like most places. My latest for @phoenixnewtimes

Our @morgfisch went to Short Creek, home to Arizona's biggest measles outbreak in decades. It's also the former home of polygamist leader Warren Jeffs. Jeffs' reign is over, but measles -- and low vaccination rates -- shows he casts a long shadow. https://t.co/XBKF5ZoVGJ

Republicans wants to free the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office from federal oversight, citing a $350M price tag. So, the federal judge ordered an audit. It found that 72% of costs charged to court-ordered compliance had little to do with that at all. https://t.co/Xn1t5n6CxA

Republicans have whined about the price tag of complying with federally mandated reforms. That may be the sheriff's fault.

Mohave County health officials are warning a community on the Arizona-Utah border — where vaccination rates are low — about a growing measles outbreak. Nine cases have been confirmed so far. Here’s what you should know: ⬇️ https://t.co/TabUgBeKDw

The Arizona Supreme Court has been using AI "avatars" to explain rulings and make them more digestible. But one such video -- announcing the denial of a death penalty appeal -- struck some as "horrifying," "gross" and "dystopian." By @morgfisch: https://t.co/u4AXEOIcEm

The Arizona Supreme Court's "AI reporters" are meant to make decisions more accessible, but they strike some as creepy.
