I’m looking for a study where someone has looked at accuracy on Raven’s matrices (or similar) items under extreme time pressure at the item level (not time pressure at the test level). I can’t find anything, but surely this study must exist?

Have always wondered what would happen if someone submitted an empirical version of this kind of paper to @PLOSONE, given its “we ignore perceived significance” policy.

I wrote a piece about David Tall, who was a big influence on my career and died in July. Part of a special issue of The Mathematics Enthusiast.

UPDATE: further investigations have revealed that this was my grandfather’s doing and that my grandmother, the librarian, found it very annoying.

My grandparents used to do this, and my grandmother was the librarian of the Geological Society of London during the war. I take this to be evidence that the practice is acceptable.

Currently visiting the University of Vienna where they have statues of distinguished former students and staff. But at @lborouniversity my proposed statue of Tony Croft was REJECTED.

An enjoyable attempt to explain cricket to an American audience in @TheAtlantic. They got to the bit where an explanation of the lbw law was required, but instead decided that describing it as a “complicated misadventure” would suffice.

This is a lovely essay by Donald Gillies about Popper, Lakatos and Feyerabend. I particularly enjoyed the revelation that Popper took two postdocs to each of his lectures who had to clear the room of smoke before he would agree to start teaching.

Sad to report that @TFrancome also graduated today, but was dismissed by the official photographer for looking rubbish.
