Just curious why people get so up in arms about someone cutting up their mother’s 1980s wedding dress but this has gotten only positive responses. 🤔 Maybe I just have a chill audience and I made my points well

I’m leaning toward the more traditional beautifully made suits this year than the big spectacle pieces. Beautifully executed tailoring should speak for itself

Also tailoring doesn’t mean alterations!! That’s a misnomer!
I’m not gunna get into the weeds of the Met Gala discourse this year, I just wanna state As A Tailor, there seems to be a misunderstanding of what tailoring is. Tailoring is not just about perfect fit but about construction. Its about the use of interlinings to create structure

The deconstructed suit with all the basting still in is becoming the naked dress for me (over used, the gimmick feels old)

Also, 3 fold ties are a very clever bit of tailoring because they origami a single layer of fabric inside the tie to give it structure instead of using tie interlining

That said, I love Alex Newell’s dress because its basically what a couture gown looks like inside out including the horsehair crin on the hem that gives dress hems structure and the quilting which is often how interlinings are applies to garments! (Inside of my bodice as example)

This is in contrast to home sewing/fast fashion/even some historical fashion methods that tend to only by 1-2 layers of fabric. Also, boning to create structure is not considered an interlining and normally used in addition to the above

Simply put, tailored construction has at least 3 layers, fashion fabric (top), interlining (middle for structure), and lining. The internal structure serves to creat shape, or give body to the fashion fabric. This is why men’s suit fronts are smooth, same with couture dresses
