It's one thing to rebel against tradition, but most of my fellow zoomers seem to be unaware that tradition ever existed at all - it might as well belong to cavemen from prehistory who we have nothing in common with.

The brain has evolved to treat most anomalous/irrelevant perceptions that occur once as illusions, but twice is usually enough to trigger long term memory. This sucks because the internet is designed to show you the same esoteric conspiracy or cursed slop, twice or more.

The imperative to just post/publish your uncooked thoughts (as a kind of “just do things”) is a way to cash in the purity of your most private and fragile tool (thought), which gets instantly oneshotted by social incentives, in exchange for short hits of attention and praise.

Perhaps we consider our world to be primarily visual because we think life begins at birth - but life begins in the womb, where the primary sense is sound. .

Wagner is so revolutionary that it can seem he had no predecessors - and yet we know his debt to Bellini, Berlioz, Beethoven (a very unusual palette). Originality is not some mystical stroke of genius, but a particularly eclectic and interesting subset of inspiration/synthesis.

David Bowie was a real artist - he understood what it meant to wear every mask, to traverse every extreme, in order to remain his true self.

Took me a while to realise there is no such thing as raising your children as religious, nor cajoling yourself into being religious, if you don't believe in it. There are no noble lies, only healthy and unhealthy irony.

Most of the time people think or say they have "hit rock bottom" they are still caught up in the enjoyable, carefree destruction of their fall - the real rock bottom is lucid and freeing. It allows one to listen to others again, to start climbing and looking up.

Music is like a great storm cloud, overwhelming, dramatic, and amorphous - this primordial substrate of the mind eventually led to the rain that is human language. Cold, wet and rather dissapointing, but undeniably hitting you, impinging on you, in distinct drops.

'Serious' music, symphonic music, is all about tracing a theme through countless variations, transformations and repetitions - personal identity is quite similar.

Being online too long often leads to a seizure or electric shock-like, excitotoxic state. When someone is having an electric shock they grasp very tightly to the live wire, which is fixed by hitting them off it with a big wooden plank.

Freud looked soberly in places where most people really don't want to look, and unsuprisingly found many things that others never found, and that most people are still terrified of entertaining.

When teachers/science communicators used to say “there’s still so much we don’t know about x”, they should’ve added the caveat “we don’t know, but academics will pretend like they do all the time, in countless manipulative and hard to pinpoint ways”.

I see so clearly now that the authoritarianism of parents and teachers is just as evil as that of dictators, and likewise their love and patience equivalent to angelic beings. Scale is quite irrelevant.
