1) A workgroup of UC-wide experts writes a report on the inadequacy of certain high school data science curricula as satisfying UC admissions requirements for mathematics. It was chaired by the “Director of Pedagogy” for a data science major who also co-created the most popular…

She also has a political "dog whistle" in that rant (beyond Philosophy/East Asian studies, she's also a lawyer). She refers to BOARS as having engaged in "originalism", which is the leading conservative legal theory. i.e., BOARS are conservative Republicans.

Thanks for elevating Pam's blog post, I think it's an important one. I've included the link, as I think it's important for individuals to read it firsthand and judge for themselves.
@Melodiekbaker
To be clear, the blog post contains serious errors. First, the workgroup explicitly states AP Statistics is appropriate as a fourth year math class, despite Pam claiming statistics is next on the chopping block. 1/

Excerpt from the article (): "It is dumbfounding, to say the least, that in the 21st century world of data-driven decision-making, following the very advent of public AI use, courses rich in highly relevant quantitative skills will no longer count as math…
@minilek
Thanks for posting this. As someone who teaches in the UC system, I read the blog post and knew it had to be hyperbole. Statistics and Data Science should absolutely not replace Algebra 2 for college admissions. It also simply made no sense for Statistics and CS to be next on the…

Taking a 4th year math class that isn't pre-calculus though, worries me. It puts the student behind everyone else when they decide to pursue a STEM major and now have to take it at the college. I took AP Stats as an additional class, not specifically as a 4th year math class.
@minilek
I came back to teaching -- but in math -- 14 yrs ago after a long career as a software entrepreneur & executive. I wanted to help diversify the STEM pipeline.
Being in my teacher prep program showed me some of why the STEM pipeline is so broken.
We're FINALLY making progress.

I don't doubt that this is at least partly about white priveledge/entitlement, but I suspect it's also about certain academic disciplines that are actually more about advocacy than scholarship.

Consultants trying to sell their magic potion for $$& and when their solutions don’t work they will blame the parents, patriarch or capitalism
@minilek
I won’t comment on this issue but my last job was a data science job & the students coming out of “data science” programs had profound gaps in their knowledge of math & stats & a total lack of understanding about what they were going w/ their “data science.” It was scary…

A thing I’ve observed in recent years is dumbing down subjects so that more people can pieces of paper that claim they’ve learned it, but it’s so dumbed down, it’s useless in the real world.
You just end up w/ graduates buried in debt who can’t get hired.
