As ya’ll wake up, don’t sleep on the role WNBA played in Georgia race. Warnock was polling below ten percent when the Atlanta Dream started wearing his name in response to co-owner Kelly Loefler’s condemnation of the BLM movement. It spread thru the league & upped his profile
Can we all sing a praise song for Darnella Frazier who had the presence of mind to film that video that made such a difference in this case and now must live with the memories that will walk alongside her for the rest of her years
We interrupt the coverage of the shooting of a 13-yr-old boy that interrupted coverage of traffic stop shooting of a 20–yr-old man that interrupted coverage of Derek Chauvin trial for the killing of George Floyd for news of 8 ppl killed at Fedex facility in Indianapolis
America
This moment will not get much attention. But when Judge Jackson said ….”for my daughters... I admit that I did not always get the [work/motherhood] balance right... but I love you so much”. Womenfolk everywhere felt that deep inside their soul.
If you are thinking about using the phrase “racially-charged” in a headline or news report today — stop. Hit delete. Start over and make it plain. The shooter in Buffalo called himself a racist in his manifesto so you can too.
On a Sunday news show the esteemed CBS defense correspondent David Martin was asked if the greatest threat to US security comes from outside or within. He said military generals overwhelmingly say within. And then the host moved on to next topic. Like yawning at a coming cyclone
This made my heart soar. A family that adopted an African American child have been posting pix of the notable Black women she dresses up to emulate during Black History Month. This is her depiction of Gwen Ifill. I love this. But more importantly, Gwen would have LOVED this
You may notice that I don’t use the word riot when talking about Tulsa. I stopped after I learned while visiting Greenwood that black business owners never got to collect insurance because it was deemed to be a riot instead of a massacre
People are learning about Tulsa for the first time. Don’t stop. Educate yourself about all of this. All of it. That fuse of fury was unleashed all across America and some would rather we forget. We cannot. We must not.
A reminder to journalists and headline writers. George Floyd is not on trial in absentia, despite the obvious defense attorney’s strategy. This is the Derek Chauvin trial. To call this the George Floyd trial is to participate in the Chauvin defense play book.
My beloved big sis passed away. Anyone who’s lost a sibling knows this particular heartbreak. Cindy’s path to Glory is paved in gold b/c of her open-hearted generosity. She gave of her time & her resources. Hope the joy in her smile is contagious to all who see this❤️💔❤️
Okay. This needs to be said. We NEED daily briefings from CDC & public health officials. We NEED to hear from epidemiologists and virologists and disease trackers. These daily rambling WH briefings w/ the chest pounding abt progress don’t assuage fear. Just the opposite.
I spoke to a young journalist today who said she was inspired to enter the field because she saw me at work at NPR years ago. It encouraged her to see a path for herself. I did everything to keep from crying on the spot. Representation matters. Know that
The word “heartland” has also resurfaced. I grew up in the so-called heartland. Land of casseroles and county fairs and Friday night bingo. And yet it seems that term does not encompass the neighborhoods where I lived and the folk of the great migration that raised me. Ya know?
So if he wants to give a speech on Juneteenth where Tulsa race massacre took place, all of us with a voice & a platform should make sure everyone in the entire world knows every detail about those two events that are not well taught or discussed. Answer this wink w/ some wisdom
Today is Gwen Ifill’s Brithday and I can’t help but wonder how her “mama don’t take no mess” strategy of moderating would have kept this train from veering off the track. Missing her and I know....I know .... I am not alone
Hank Aaron got so much hate mail that the Atlanta Braves had to hire a secretary to help handle the Avalanche. He donated his memorabilia but kept the hate mail to remember how he was treated. We should remember it too and remember it wasn’t that long ago
Frederick Douglass was the most photographed man of his era. Can only imagine how proud he would be to know his young descendants were on film reading his words.
WATCH: 'What To The Slave Is The Fourth Of July?' By Frederick Douglass : NPR
Big ups to
@lukecombs
for showing respect, enthusiasm, awe and grace and making sure that even though he was onstage, Tracy Chapman was in the driver’s seat on Fast Car
People need to stop giving oxygen to the idea that teaching America’s history in full is an exercise in making white people or white children feel bad about themselves. Not the objective. Not the purpose. Not the hidden agenda. Wisdom is earned by confronting hard truths.
Our son recieved the
@StanfordUniversity
James W Lyons award for service and exceptional contributions to the university community and I could not be more PROUD.
News cycle we are about to requires this reminder. The Derek Chauvin trial is about to start. This is not the George Floyd trial. The man whose breath was squeezed out or his body is not on trial. There are other ways to honor his name beyond giving him this erroneous headline
DevastatIng thread. Newspaper in the beautiful northern Italian city of Bergamo had 1 1/2 pages of obituaries on February 9. By March 13 there were ten pages of obits. Pls share so people understand importance of social distancing
Tempted to pick up my pen and go in hard on the disrespect shown to Ketanji Brown Jackson today. Rarely have we seen such trifling behavior in our Nation’s capitol. But right now I am going to focus on what this day means for America and it’s grand promise.
We need a cooking show that features 3 older black women who can throw down in the kitchen. They do tutorials on classic comfort food — smothered chicken, banana cream pie, fried catfish with chow chow - and then judge who got it right. They are loud & funny & yes judgmental
Here is an unfortunate reality. There was no problem finding a a big pool of black and Latino homebuyers to usher into riskier and more expensive mortgages. But... when it comes to seeking black talent — suddenly there’s an alleged shortage.
Stamping this with insufficient
Yet another reason to love Jason Sudeikis. At Ted Lasso Season 2 Premiere he showed support for
#JadonSancho
#MarcusRashford
#BukayoSaka
because of course that is what Ted would do
Remember. Always remember that 58 years ago today four precious girls were killed in Birmingham, Alabama by white supremacists who planted a bomb in a church on Sunday morning. But also remember this .......
I have deep admiration for the players, coaches and coms team at the
@AtlantaDream
They called a foul when co-owner Loeffler tried to muzzle them and then helped her opponent snatch victory with a strong assist. They did it with grit and class and careful strategy. RESPECT
As a 17-year-old High School student in Queens, Sherrilyn Ifill put her dreams on paper and then ordered her steps such that decades later her name is on the short list for the High Court among a roster of brilliant and highly qualified Black women.
The WNBA took a badass stand when Loeffler, a co-owner of Atlanta Dream, criticized the league for centering the BLM & Say Her Name movement in their season. The senator was clearly playing politics so the Dream had to decide how to keep getting paid & pay attn to their values
1. There’s an Army of DC folk with a hole in their heart & their calendar on New Years Day. For decades we all gathered at Gwen’s for food & music & non stop laughter. Over time our hair got grayer. Our waistlines grew. So did our kids & our allegiance to the village she created
Lord, this week made me miss
@gwenifill
The disrespect shown toward
@abbydphillip
@Yamiche
@AprilDRyan
feels personal in a specific way for any woman or esp woman of color who had served in the WH press corps. Deep respect and strong admiration for all 3 of you. Press on!
Can’t help but compare Barr and other AG departures in this admin from DOJ to the day
@EricHolder
left the bldg to the applause of everyone who stepped out of their offices, lined the stairwells and hung over the railings to 👏🏽 clap him out the door w/ respect for job well done
Watch NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern pick apart this reporter's question during a joint press conference with Finnish PM Sanna Marin. He asked the pair 'are you two meeting because you're similar in age and got a lot of common stuff there?'

This was not an impulsive move. The Dream had to carefully order their steps. Sue Bird reportedly suggested they look into Loeffler’s opponent. They researched him. Did meetings. Liked what they heard and started wearing Vote Warnock Shirts.
You were told George Floyd died because his heart was too big. He died because Derek Chauvin’s heart was too small — final statement from Jerry Blackwell in prosecution closing argument
I don’t know who needs to hear this but..... keep going. It will get better. Maybe not in an hour .... or even tomorrow....but eventually. More people than you know are pulling for you and would drop everything to be there FOR you even if they can’t be physically WITH you. 💕
This was at a point when a lot of ppl were like - What’s a Warnock? Well that quickly changed. The Dream elevated the profile of the Rev from Dr King’s Atlanta church. Donations to Raphael Warnock soared. His social media presence grew. And players from other teams joined in
Been keeping a little secret. My daughter just excitedly texted to say she heard my voice at beginning of
@WrinkleInTime
🎥 as Storm is listening to the radio. So honored to contribute in a tiny way to
@ava
‘s masterpiece. So honored to be alive in the age of her genius
This would be a good day to give someone you don’t know your best self. A store clerk, a kid on the bus, an elderly person, a dude with a broom. During a fractured time, a smile , a ‘have a great day greeting’, a welcoming vibe may just help keep a teetering world on its axis
My son took a pic of me & I immediately went to “that place.” Ya know? The zone where you only see lines/flaws/thickening in the midsection. But then I heard a little voice in my head: Earned wisdom is better than a teenage waistline. I like that voice. She’s welcome at my table.
Can’t stop thinking of Elijah McClain. His last words. “I’m an introvert” His smile in all those videos. A sweet & gentle soul extinguished. The way the drug THEY injected would have coursed through his 140 pd frame like a toxic jolt. This took a saw and a hammer to my heart
A gaggle of my childhood pals showed up to hold me up at my sister’s funeral & every time I think about it, I want to cry all over again. Important bonds are made when you’re young and trying to figure out the world. Grateful beyond words for that posse. Friendship is treasure
Can we retire the phrase “racist dog whistle” because it implies that someone is speaking in a pitch only few can decipher. We are way past coded language in the weaponization of racial fear. The roar of that freight train is loud enough and clear enough for all to hear
Hero is too small a word for a man who served as the conscience of our nation. They beat him up on that bridge in Selma but they could not beat him down. He stayed humble. Stayed optimistic. Stayed ready. Stayed in the struggle. And we will stay forever grateful. Goodbye, Sir
John Thompson had a 97% graduation rate for his players at Georgetown. At some point a teacher claimed he was “uneducatable”. He showed her & then he spent a lifetime showing all of us how to lift up athleticism/scholarship/courage/righteousness & victory on and off the court💔
John Thompson passed away last night.
He was the first Black coach to win a NCAA title.
He won two as a player w the Celtics.
He had a 97% graduation rate for his players at Georgetown.
Here is Allen Iverson thanking John for saving his life.🌎🏀💔
If you downplayed the virus and steadfastly supported an administration that downplayed Covid and refused to do simple things like wear & require masks, purchase PPE & refrain from large gatherings, then keep your happy first-in-line vaccine selfish selfies off social media.
Proud to officially announce that I’m writing a book on race & identity in America & beyond for
@simonschuster
based on 10 years of collecting an avalanche of cultural candor at The Race Card Project. Under 2 bk deal, will also write a related kidz book.
Her name is Breonna Taylor. She was in her home. Police were looking for someone who didn’t live there. Questionable warrant. Suspect already in custody when police busted in. She was an EMT. Essential worker. Ppl we lift up as heroes. Another tragedy we almost didn’t hear about
“Two knees. One protesting in the grass, one pressing on the back of a man’s neck. Choose. You have to choose which knee you will defend. There are no half choices.... There is only the knee of protest, or the knee on the neck.” THIS from Sally Jenkins
During the years when I was a host at NPR I often asked a question to members of the military I interviewed who had been stationed in Afghanistan & Iraq. “What are you fighting for?” The answers were rarely clear. There were often long pauses. Been thinking on that this week
so interesting to hear commentators chat abt what Serena leaned abt being a Black woman in a White sport. Wouldn’t it be interesting for them to talk about what THEY leaned b/c many were not as accommodating as they could have been& she’s been serving up lessons since she arrived
That lone Capitol Hill officer chased up the stairs while holding a baton by white men storming the Captiol showed incredible restraint. And then when other officers caught up to him, they calmly talked to the insurrectionists unlike response to BLM during hot nights this summer
This just in - I’ll be joining
@MichelleObama
onstage on the Twin Cities stop of her Book tour. To talk about this powerful book
#Becoming
with Mrs O in my home state where my own
#IamBecoming
journey began is a thrill beyond measure. Hello Minnesota!!!
People need to watch out for and watch over Daniella Frazier who filmed George Floyd’s death. Trauma will be a fellow traveler. Her city destroyed. Her heart broken. Her soul unsettled. Her world upended.
Grace. Strength. Wisdom. Grit. Experience and a Shout out to Black Women who uphold our democracy. What a day for this country. Feeling so deeply blessed to witness this history
I still write letters and thank you notes and send postcards (Both my parents and several of my relatives were postal workers) I will be sending a whole lot more correspondence so I can have the joy of placing THIS stamp on upper right hand corner. Lord I miss her so
As of noon today there is not a single black woman serving in the US Senate. Stop what you are doing. Write a letter to the woman you want to serve in the senate even if she cannot see it for herself, even if she can’t see a path , even if she is in high school,
My mother Betty is an old school cook. She keeps things simple and mainly cooks by memory but thankfully she still would write out her recipes on little cards that we now cherish like precious jewels
I just don’t want to hear anyone else on tv or the radio say they can’t believe this is happening in America. It was signaled and projected. It was foreseen and forwarned. After all the falsehoods and fanning of grievances... it was...sadly ... inevitable
Did last of my interviews w/
@MichelleObama
for her

book tour & it sure was fun. So much candor, wisdom & laughter. As she rounds the corner to the end of the tour, a round of applause for her vision to make her book come alive for readers around the world
It is still very weird to me that the Newseum is gone from downtown DC. Poof! No longer there. I still think this country deserves a museum dedicated to journalism and its central role in American life
