Lyft acquires Freenow from BMW & Mercedes-Benz joint venture in Europe. RIP to all of Mercedes-Benz mobility portfolio of the 2010s: Car2go, MyTaxi, Moovel, Beat, etc. Where there is no vision, the people will perish.

To be clear, I’m not sure if Waymo shares data at the city level. but I’d guess they do. Worth noting: Waymo is a member of the Open Mobility Foundation, which builds open data standards for cities + industry. Uber and Lyft are not members.

Also. drumroll. Waymo vehicles don’t break speed limits. They can be capped by design. Uber and Lyft can’t enforce speed limits, and they don’t share data on how fast their drivers are going.

Waymo has no choice but to work with cities as AVs are visible, geo-fixed, and depend on local coordination (think shared micromobility). Uber and Lyft didn’t want to get stuck in taxi regs, so they pre-empted cities and ran everything through the state. Now Waymo looks more.

I love the beef between Uber/Lyft and Waymo in SF right now. We’ve come full circle. Uber and Lyft are angry but they spent a decade pre-empting cities at the state level, refusing to share data or collaborate. Now Waymo’s getting exclusive access to Market Street. Poetic.

Also Waymo is playing their cards here, working with regulators at the city level (at least attempting) instead of the traditional Uber/Lyft playbook at pre-empting at the state level.

This is a fascinating urban policy experiment in SF. Cities now have policy tools to enforce "low-speed zones", regulating shared e-bikes, scooters, taxis, transit, and AVs, to create truly multimodal streets that don’t prioritize one user over another.

Nah, Lyft has been the only ride-hail integration in Google Maps for years in the U.S. Has that materially changed their market share? Not at all. People decide on their mode of transport before planning their trips. I’ve seen this play out time and time again with.

I think Ackman is wrong here on $UBER: if Google chooses to do so, it could put Waymo inside Google Maps (1 billion MAUs) and match riders to vehicles. Tesla is another threat. Either would obviate the need for Uber. All likely to happen a lot sooner than "many years".
