"It was definitely weird ..." Gradey Dick was drafted as one of the best shooters in college basketball ... and for his first two months as a pro, couldn't make a shot. My feature for
@Sportsnet
on how he held tough and broke through the rookie wall --
NBA commissioner Adam Silver thanks a long list of people who helped make the bubble happen but singles out Kyle Lowry of the Raptors and Canadian forward Dwight Powell of the Mavericks for their contributions.
These are Fred VanVleet's full comments on the officiating tonight after Raptors loss to the Clippers. Just eviscerating. He will take a fine ... very big fine:
LeBron James: “I saw Scottie Barnes for the first time in seventh grade and I knew he was going to be special … it may have been a surprise to some of you guys but it’s no surprise to me … it’s a beautiful thing to watch.”
No games to cover, watch or play. Household tasks that have been pushed off for years suddenly in view. Absent my lifeblood of excuses and distractions, I am about to be badly exposed as deeply lazy and at my core ambivelent about doing things that aren't fun.
Few Raptors have ever had more off-court engagements going on than Pascal Siakam. Per sources he plans to maintain Toronto as the home for his charitable foundation going forward.
In NBA guys get beat clean by inside-out moves every once in a while ... not that often in the NHL, and almost never when puck carrier isn’t at top speed. McJesus is a trip:
OG Anunoby was one of Scottie Barnes' closest friends on the team, as was Precious Achiuwa. Tough day for him, living through his first major NBA trade. Barnes was asked to comment after the game but declined.
Nick Nurse says he paused a moment after the horn in Game 3 because it was the day after his Mom’s birthday. His Mom passed away earlier in the season.
I just spoke with former Miami Heat and (for now) Toronto Raptors guard Goran Dragic about his comments on Slovenian TV. He is one of the most respected vets in the NBA, and clearly feels terribly about how things have come across. Story coming soon for
@Sportsnet
:
The NBA title was just won by a team with one hand-crafted superstar and depth, all from outside the lottery. They beat a super team that ran out of depth. The Lakers weren’t watching maybe. Will be fun to see.
Andrew Wiggins always had this in him. He showed it in moments over his career. He needed the right time and place to bring it out of him for long stretches. He's changed his career and how people think about it, and maybe how he does too. Full respect.
Was an honour to be on the
@FAN590
for the the final show by an absolute legend,
@FadooBobcat
. This is how his sign off after 31 years at the top of the game sounded from my chair:
“We play as hard as we can, we listen to each other and no one man is bigger than the team, and that’s why we’re able to go out there and win basketball games”— Thad Young.
Just laughable. Six-hour bus rides? Fine. Dressing rooms? Fine. Benches? Fine. Face offs? Fine. Breathing hard and flying around on skates, leaving a vapor trail? Cool. But hitting will spread Covid! I don’t even care about hitting, tbh, but this is next-level dumb:
Still in shock that TNT reporter (likely prompted by a producer) informed LBJ about Erin Popovich's passing on live TV. Real life is not a reality show. My kids cringed. Any adult should know better. Let him learn about it in private and respond when/if he chooses. Shameful.
Sooo ... I feel confident saying that Kawhi was in Toronto as of Thursday night and was unlikely to have been on the MSLE corporate jet that apparently left early Friday morning for San Diego and is apparently on its way back Toronto this afternoon. That's all I got.
I'm told VanVleet's 4yr/$85 deal (player option in yr 4) starts at $21.25 and then decreases by 8% in yr 2 (2021/22) before ramping up again. The drop going into summer of 2021 helps preserve Raptors cap space.
When the Raptors traded for an injured Kawhi Leonard, Alex McKechnie, the team's director of sports science got a text: 'You're the most important person in the organization now' -- on the triumph of load management:
That loony fan is lucky Russell Westbrook didn’t go Jermaine O’Neal on him (frankly, the NBA is, too). Dude had no business walking up to a player after a game like that. That’s why I doubt the league hands out a serious punishment for that shove. Russ was protecting himself
“There just needs to be a general rule: no bullshit allowed” — Steve Kerr on need to bring some defensive balance to the NBA. Says it starts with refs not enabling offensive players manipulating calls. “Some of this stuff … if you tried it in a pick up game you’d start a fight.”
Game 1 vs. Nets was the most-watched
@Raptors
first-round game ever on
@Sportsnet
and drew 34% more viewers than Game 1 vs. Orlando last year. Average audience of 1.05 million and reached 2.5-million Canadians overall. Canada loves them some 'bubble' Raps, clearly.
No, we're NOT polarized on this. More than 80% of Canadians have taken time & effort to be fully vaxxed, an AMAZING show of unanimity. Even vax hesitant folks I know can share views reasonably. A small minority are being loud/rude in opposition. Doug just happens to be related.
Premier Ford says society is polarized now more than ever and says he's experienced the same thing in his own family.
"It's been one of the hardest thing my family and i have ever gone through."
#onpoli
I’m out of jokes. This is a tragedy. How much passion the Canes have playing in front of a goalie they met at the intermission vs. how much the Leafs showed playing for each other. Sad.
After Raptors lost Game 2 Nurse said to his team ‘all we need to do is go out there and get one’. Kawhi said ‘F-that let’s get both’ .... and here we are.
Honestly. The avg. draft position of this group was 29th — not counting Fred, who was undrafted. Combined they’ve started hundreds of games, won league honors, made or will make more than $1B, won titles and are all still thriving in the world’s best league. Incredible story:
Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not allowed to mourn the raptors bench mob. We drafted those guys, they won in our G league & became our NBA champions. We saw their first award, their first big game, their first clutch basket. They’re on a new journey, but we were 1st 🥲
My Big Read on Pascal Siakam who went through the bubble, Tampa, COVID, injury and a shift in public opinion as sudden as his spin move, and come out better in every way:
On Remembrance Day I will wear a poppy on our Raptors-Clippers broadcast from LA. It is a symbolic reminder we ALL need of sacrifices made by many so we ALL can live in a place ALL are valued. As a colleague & Canadian, there is no such thing as 'you people.' There is only 'us'.
“I was scared to give Fred a hug, but he hugged me right back … there’s something about Fred’s hugs, they’re heart-warming” — Raptors rookie Scottie Barnes gives his hugging scouting report:
Kawhi Leonard when facing the obiligatory free agency questions from New York media: "I'm not talking about that now. Ask me about the game."
And you know what? They did. Didn't seem that hard.
"If you beat him to the spot & he runs you over, it's a foul. I thought he threw 3 or 4 elbows to the face & got called for one, OK? We're gonna stand in there, but if we're legal defensively, we got to have calls or we don't have a chance" -- Nurse on guarding Joel Embiid.
So ....not going too far out on the limb here given it’s midnight Eastern .... but I’m going to place a small bet that tomorrow (July 3rd) is Kawhi Day. I’ve felt *fairly* confident about Raptors chances all along and will stick with that. Wish I had more for you 😂.
Raptors are 15-6 since they got healthy & have East's longest win streak at 6. At this rate Nick Nurse is going to have start getting coach-of-the-year buzz. He's really figured out how to maximize an odd lineup and -- mainly -- have them improve week by week. Impressive stuff.
It's difficult not to think about what the
@Raptors
have and what the
@MapleLeafs
are missing.
Who is the Leafs' version of Lowry? Who among their collection of top-paid stars combines not only world-class skill but world-class will? (
@michaelgrange
)
Darko Rajakovic doubles down on comments from last night 1. On refs “I will always stand up for my guys” & 2. On Barnes as future all-star & a face of the league — “Scottie Barnes doesn’t want to be good, he wants to be great.” Says he shares traits with HOFers he’s worked with.
“I had to be the sacrificial lamb”
@DeMar_DeRozan
is still rooting for the Raptors in the Finals but explains why he was so hurt when the trade went down. Season finale of “Take It There” with
@TaylorRooks
The biggest revelation for me in interviewing Kawhi as an ex-Raptor for the first time was that he knows that Winnipeg is a city in Canada and can use it in a sentence. THE CONNECTION WAS REAL, PEOPLE!
Fred VanVleet on shooting 80-per-cent from three since the birth of his son, Fred Jr. on Monday: "That's the formula, no sleep, have lots of babies and let it fly"
Reading the detail & expense going into protecting NBA players in the bubble we should all say a prayer of thanks for the meatpackers and farm workers who get food to our table everyday while working shoulder-to-shoulder with minimal protections for little cash and zero thanks.
The Raptors add Christian Koloko, a 7-1 jr from Doula, Cameroon -- yes, same hometown as Pascal Siakam. Koloko has made huge strides in his three years at Arizona. Gives the Raptors someone with size, quickness and the ability to defend the rim and attack the rim to develop.
Draymond Green on the recent TNT criticism: “(Charles) Barkley should stop before I take his job. Because I can do that well, too...He also can’t talk basketball with me either. Not smart enough, not qualified. No rings, can’t sit at this table.”
The sticking point in a Lowry-to-Miami scenario is Tyler Herro. Miami is ok to give up 26yo Robinson, a pending RFA who might be pricy to sign; Raptors prefer 21yo Herro who is on 2nd year of rookie deal.
"We have a phenomenal coaching staff. When I first got here and got the first scouting report, I was like, 'oh shit', this is one of the best scouting reports I've ever seen" -- Thad Young.
Always Interesting to re-read some of the details of Kobe's 2003 sexual assault case, in particular the statement provided by the nurse who examined the victim. So many other great players. Why be a fan of this guy?
Note for Philadelphia (4) vs. Toronto (5) series: 76ers All-Defensive wing Matisse Thybulle is currently ineligible for games in Toronto due to Canada's vaccine mandate.
It would be cool to be an OKC fan right now. Smart management, good young coach; several really promising young players and every draft pick in the league:
Josh Giddey has his eighth 10-assist game, breaking a tie with Luka Doncic for the 3rd most such games by a teenager in NBA history. Only LeBron James (11) & Stephon Marbury (9) have more
“I wish I would have made it … but I've been through a lot the past few years & I'm definitely feeling like myself and feeling good and healthy and I just want to play basketball” —Pascal Siakam in missing out on All-Star, said he was thrilled for Fred VanVleet.
Giannis on Drake trolling him with the two championship belts:
"That's good. He cares about me. I really don't [care about him]. I'm just here to win games and help my team win. That's all."
“It makes me feel great and makes our team feel great as well, knowing that he’s got our back” — Scottie Barnes on Rajakovic’s very vocal support the other night.
I got some Qs last night from folks like, "is he always like this?" So for those paying attention to Fred VanVleet for the first time today: Fred is among the smartest, most grounded & sincere people I've covered in 25+ yrs, & you won't find any1 that will tell you differently.
Man, the mustache
@FriedgeHNIC
grew for Movember is horrible. Hopefully inspired some men to get get scanned for prostate cancer and other conditions. Maybe saved a life. The only way it could possibly worth it. Worst duster of all time.
You never know when your teenager is gonna just want to shoot the breeze with you. My insight: Parenting is like being the 11th man on an NBA team — stay ready.
My favourite RJ hate comment is when people say he's going to be another 'DeRozan type', like somehow being a five-time all-star, leading scorer on six playoff teams who has earning $150-million and his one of the most respected players in the NBA is .... a bad outcome.
