let's be clear about what these people are mourning: a yearly prize that benefits an extremely small number of authors, and a ceremony predominantly attended by corporate sponsors who, i guess, need to make up for not being asked to prom in high school or something.

This speaks to how ridiculous it is that these literary prizes try to advertise themselves as these load-bearing pillars of the arts ecosystem. We're not actually beholden to this sort of winner-takes-all prize culture, but corners of the industry are cowed into thinking we are.
