This speaks to how ridiculous it is that these literary prizes try to advertise themselves as these load-bearing pillars of the arts ecosystem. We're not actually beholden to this sort of winner-takes-all prize culture, but corners of the industry are cowed into thinking we are.

A bit confused. Why should GoC give $5M over 3 yrs so Giller could award $100,000 each year to a winner. Am I missing something?. Giller Prize says it will be forced to cease operations without federal funding /via @globeandmail
