In other words, designers have intuitive or lived experience sensibilities to propose visions (tastemaking). Human-centered design research (empathy) is secondary.

Design tastemaking can better describe how designers consider people. Good designers are tastemakers who rely on intuition and have the ability to get people to desire their proposed artifacts.

Design empathy based on gathering insights is rarely how good designers work. While I wish good designers were empathetic and worked to deeply understand people and their needs, it has never been a primary design approach.

Then, designers must consider the future consequences of their work—a significant challenge in contemporary design that receives very little attention.

We design products that solve problems. Products typically generate other problems. Some new problems are systemic and can’t be solved with more products.

Fresh from the oven. Our systematic review about how designers engage with sustainability. We found that designers are aware and interested. However, other priorities defined by business and policy strongly reduce their ability to act. Existing sustainability tools appear naive.

Sometimes designing nothing is the best proposal. But a designing-nothing approach is not design.
