@MaggieChapman Didn't Israel end its occupation of Gaza in the 90s in return for the promise of peace ? Or were you still supporting Mugabe at that point ?

We’ll never have peace in Israel or Palestine if we don’t recognise why those who’ve been subjected to blockade, occupation & worse retaliate. Peace-making requires honesty. Including acknowledging awful violent acts by different actors. But we cannot erase context of occupation

The unfolding events in Israel and Palestine are deeply alarming. We need an immediate ceasefire and urgent de-escalation. And we need a route out of this tragic cycle of violence: ending the occupation is the only means of achieving a just and lasting peace.

@mehercle @MaggieChapman Israel withdrew completely from Gaza in 2005, evicting their own settlers in the process but leaving behind the network of state of the art greenhouses etc. for the benefit of the people of Gaza.

@mehercle @MaggieChapman Hamas even destroyed orchards that Israel left behind. Orchards that were meant to provide work and income for the people in Gaza. They are pursuing a deliberate policy of running the place into the ground and inviting retaliation.

@mehercle @daveharrower @MaggieChapman Israeli military control ceased in 1993. Israel unilaterally withdrew the settlements in 2005 & does not occupy any part of Gaza. Following 2006 election & a brief civil war Hamas expelled the opposition party Fatah. No elections since. Egypt also blockade Gaza because of Hamas.
