Are you teaching a course in phonetics or phonology this semester/quarter? Would you like your students to get some hands-on experience with linguistic research? Help us annotate [thousands of!] vocalizations from babies all over the world!

But I can't let perfect be the enemy of good. If you find a mistake, just tell me! The tutorials aren't peer-reviewed or anything, so I don't much credit for them. I just think DSP is super important and I wanted to make it accessible to more people.

I was scared to share these for a long time, because I'm not a trained engineer. I anticipate that my code isn't perfect, and I may have made some mistakes given that I'm self taught.

Also, after sitting on this for a very (very) long time, I'm finally publicly sharing the tutorial series I wrote on digital signal processing 🎶🗣️>👩‍💻>🔢: .

I wanted guided tutorials on digital signal processing so I decided to create them. The result is this ebook: "Digital Signal Processing for Speech, Language, and Hearing Scientists&qu...

Back (temporarily) from a very sleepy Twitter hiatus to announce a couple cool new products (idk where I'm supposed to self-promote anymore, so here we are). # 1: new paper showing that kids who hear "bustier" input have larger receptive vocabularies:

Ppl in developmental labs: how do you allow caregivers to monitor their kids in the testing room during experiments? Wall-mounted web cam streaming to caregiver’s cell? Baby monitor? We had sthg more elaborate at UMD but it involved construction and I want to avoid that.

Sometimes I wonder if UCLA admin sits up at night concocting ways to put a damper on my research program: 6 mos to hire a research coordinator, 4 mos to get a vendor for audio equipment approved (not ordered. just approved), 3 mos to get an RA at another institution hired. .

@NIH_LRP 2) don’t have a privileged socioeconomic background. I want more people to benefit from this program! You forgo *years* of $$$ in grad school+postdoc and unless you can rely on sig. intergenerational wealth transfer, you must find a way to make up for it.

I am grateful to receive a renewal on my @NIH_LRP award to study speech processing in preschoolers. It will cancel my outstanding debt, allowing me to buy a house. I’m sharing this to show a pathway to success in academia even if you 1) graduated with debt &

Also, TODAY (10:50) I'll be giving a talk in the @icphs2023 session on Big Data/Speech Corpora. All the greatest hits: acoustics, signal processing, machine learning, baby vocalizations. everything I sort of think I know about and certainly love. See you there!.

I have 3 pairs of glasses. and I forgot every single one of them in L.A. when I left on this trip. I have an amazing colleague who broke into my office to grab them and bring them to me, but until then, I'll be that person in the front row squinting at @icphs2023 today!.

L.A. is SO big—I’m not in nearly good enough shape to run/bike far enough and see everything. I bike 20 mins to the beach and there are surfers coming out of the water. Like, real ones! That’s not just in the movies. My midwestern mind is blown 🤯.

@matt_with_ears I used vocoding to teach myself DSP, but bc I think DSP is so fundamental to my field, I also wrote a series of open-source tutorials in Jupyter notebooks on topics like digital filters and FFTs. Those will be publicly available on my website/Git soon!.

I've never been more proud of a single paper bc of what it took to get here: retook calculus, studied Lyons' (2010) textbook daily for ~3 mos, and best of all collaborated w @matt_with_ears & twitterless Matt Goupell who met w me weekly for an entire semester to teach me vocoding.

For the last year of my postdoc, I set my hardest training goal yet: learn digital signal processing. That was about a yr ago, and today it culminates in this ~monster~ of a paper that takes you from A-Z on channel vocoders:

Reviewer for a grant submitted by myself, @ronewman1, @RachelRRomeo, & @KatieVonHolzen left the following comment: “The team would be strengthened by including an expert on child language development, particularly parent-child interactions.”. I’m just going to leave that there🤣.
