When we started this @nytopinion project and asked people to share their last messages from loved ones who died of Covid I thought we’d get poignant goodbyes, texts and videos from people who knew the end was near. What we ended up with was very different.

I’m on parental leave so I can’t take credit for how this @nytopinion project turned out, but I can also say — just as a reader — it’s exactly the gut punch this moment deserves.
