Any prominent person can find themselves in a difficult situation these days. As celebrity crisis communications consultants, we say that what counts is not who you are or what you’re accused of, but how you handle it.

You need to be consistent in your message. Once you’ve made a statement you can’t deviate from it. According to the Mail “the defiant star said he is ‘ashamed’ and 'deeply sorry’.” Is he defiant or deeply sorry? His threat to sue the BBC has added a new twist.

1. He waited too long to apologise. Speed is of the essence in any crisis situation. You need to speak and take action immediately. Even when the details are unclear, and the lawyers are involved, there are still things that you can say that will put you in a better light.

In any crisis you’ve got to express concern for those who are affected by the situation and you’ve got to show that you’re taking action. Here, Jenas has finally said sorry, but he should have made it clear right from the start that he would co-operate with any investigation.

1. He did an interview without thinking about his message. “I’m not happy,” he repeatedly told TalkSport. He probably isn’t, but how does this comment help him? It also gave the impression that he thought he was the victim here. Celebrity self-pity never goes down well.
