I am a scientist, science communicator and musician who believes science belongs in the street, and in the pub, as much as in the laboratory.
Cornwall
Joined June 2011
Now 3 weeks since an envelope from Cornwall "International Tracked and Signed" with @RoyalMail - the tracking says it took 1 week to reach Milton Keynes, a week later it reached Milton Keynes again, since then - nothing!

Unconventional #stringquartet line up for my homage to the remarkable iLe @ilevitable - sadly only a webcast record of the gig exists - result is *very* basic audio and video - but so important to get out of our silos! https://t.co/4LuaXonDa4

Essential part of the Midwinter celebrations - the flaming of the pud. We use šljivovica usually but for our second pud of the year we used Isautier white rum all the way from Réunion! (This is, incidentally, the safer way to do it by starting the flames in a steel ladle)

I am baffled by the phrase 'one of the world's only ...' that I have seen twice on reputable websites in the last week. Am I one of the world's only inhabitants to be perplexed by this?

Great to be back in harness, if a little odd. This week I am running wider engagement and transdisciplinary collaboration workshops for Biotechnology post-grads at the University of Insubria in Northern Italy. First non-Zoom sessions in -- Mmm -- how long has it been? Yikes!

There are 40 or so moths that look superficially like this in the UK. This is the only one that is mostly very pale, a single dark band across the middle, and slightly pointy wings. This one had the good sense to be easily caught and harmlessly evicted.

This morning's visitor is not rare but a first for our house - so worth a post. Xanthorhoe montanata (Silver-ground Carpet). (Second opinions welcomed! Moth ID can be very tricky.)

Just gave the materials the final once-over for my schools workshop at this year's @CheltSciFest I reckon last year doesn't count (because ...) so this will be my 14th consecutive year. Thanks to @mariekenavin and @ElspethKenny for the nudges. Just sad I won't actually be there.

For a #musician the first step back to #performance is rehearsal. We met for the first time since October 2020 on the first day of rule-of-six relaxed lockdown rules to get the ball rolling. Have gigs booked from July. (Positive mindset!) #strings #quartet

Thought for the day for CS educators: • Programming is a creative act. The program is a dance, the code is choreography • Virtual spaces allow students to expand creatively • Coding skills gives control over spaces, producers not consumers • And the control is the creativity

Another find on the Christmas Eve Dartmoor walk (alongside the ponies q.v.). I am almost certain this is Tremella mesenterica "Yellow Brain" or "Witches Butter" but would welcome a second opinion. Stunning colour!

Love judging #FameLabInternational2020. And always a joy to be involved with @FameLab + @BritishCouncil + @CheltSciFest . And everyone is very good. And I *still* wish we were all in tent, together, on Imperial Square, 30 minutes before the cheese is brought out 😢😋
