🎶The French composer, Francis Poulenc, used a harmonic palette containing dissonances that were extremely lush. Earl Wild’s setting surrounds Bach’s melody with a new suit of clothes not too different from Bill Evans or Oscar Peterson - with a Victor Borge wink at the end...

Which instrument did J.S. Bach like to play? A. Viola He liked to be in the middle of the harmony to hear on both sides, what the top and the bass were doing. Do not neglect the middle parts. That’s where Bach was.

🎶❤️ Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” (transcribed for the piano by my musical mentor, Earl Wild). This piece was like a companion to me for many years... #classicalpiano #ClassicalMusic #Rachmaninoff

Of course, his signature is in my collection on the wall. 🎹 What an elegant man with a mischievous wit; a stunning #pianist and an observant teacher. (The photo was taken after one of my lessons and appears in his autobiography).
I believe that the American pianist Earl Wild is still not sufficiently recognized for the probing depth of his incredible performances in a wide range of repertoire - his dazzling technique was beyond reproach and so was his music-making. Some great performances linked today.
