The world has changed since those days, we faced many challenges I never would have foreseen, and while we have had to shrink our ambitions, I am thrilled to have such incredible alignment from @GavinNewsom, HHS Sec Ghaly, CA’s world-class scientists, & amazing philanthropists.

The goal of the measure was to invest <0.1% of what the pandemic cost CA in trying to develop tech to prevent the next one- detecting outbreaks before they turn into pandemics, eliminating spread indoors so shutdowns aren’t required, and modernizing the public health workforce.

I saw the many mistakes we as a society made, how unprepared we were, and ultimately, how lucky we were that COVID, as bad as it was, wasn’t even worse. I felt a duty to ensure that we leave behind something with a chance of making sure our children never face another one.

Within a few weeks, we had grown to 100+ volunteers, had 10s of millions of web visitors, were helping the US Military build emergency hospitals, and were supplying the White House and large portions of the Fortune 500 with the data they needed to navigate the pandemic.

For me, this ends a chapter in a journey that began in the early days of COVID, when my small non-profit COVIDActNow published its first COVID forecast model.
