Seventeen years ago, in the dark cab of a semi, in the backcountry of the Texas Panhandle, a man at the end of his rope took the first step on a journey that culminates today. That man is me. That journey was the Psalms. That culmination is Untamed Prayers. In the winter of

A letter to a survivor of childhood abuse in a Christian home who is asking Christians, "Why Yahweh over Allah, Krishna, Zeus, or the other choices?" and who wonders whether, if she converts, she'll have to share Heaven with the people who abused her. Holly, I’m a

Using our position of authority to get our own way, serve our own ends, crush others, and silence and frighten them is an ungodly use of power.

The body of Christ is called to be a sacred place for the vulnerable. We have often chosen to be a safe place for the powerful and have deceived ourselves into believing that God would call that good.

We have often blamed those who suffer for their trauma; we have failed to recognize that systems can be corrupt and power abused and that like our Lord, many people in this world suffer from totally undeserved injustice and trauma.

“We must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.” 2 Cor 5:10 Before your time is up, focus on fulfilling your God-given purpose instead of criticizing others for fulfilling theirs.

The neediest place in us, the place of intolerable pain, the demandingness, the right to self – all those things will either swallow us up or drive us to the One who is the resurrection and the life - and where we find our comfort is where we will cling.

God makes it very clear that the true church is to bring light into darkness. That means seeing what things really look like and calling them by their right name. I fear that a portion of Christendom today has become less interested in truth and more interested in power.

The silence about wrongdoing can be rationalized and affirmed as a desire to protect the name of our God. Such harmful rhetoric from leadership fosters interior silence in the victims and in the followers.

Not a single word in the Beatitudes relates to human notions of what God’s kingdom is like. Human ideas of kingdom building focus on nation, race, tribe, military strength, & wealth. Jesus teaches that greatness in His kingdom is found in the character that reflects His likeness.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28 That work may not always be what we expected, or to our liking, or we may not always know what it is God is up to. But we are assured he is

Self-deception works in concert with temptation so we can convince ourselves of the rightness of actions that are in fact wrong. We use deception to say that external circumstances justify reactions. Truth and lies become confused or even reversed.

We must not assume that our family, church, community, country, or organization is always right just because the people in it use the right words. We must never agree to “protect” the name of God by covering ungodliness.

Trauma brings silence because it feels like there are no words to really describe what happened. Many times people need us to sit with them in silence. It is a way of joining with them so they are not alone in their experience of struggling to find words.
