No photos, but Romain Chapuis and Arnaud Chapuis (separate projects) are making incredibly exciting wines as well with Pinot Noir and Aligoté.

Producers that really stood out: Maison Maenad (Canadian making wine in Jura), Vin Noé (American in Burgundy also making some killer Beaujolais), Charlotte and David Beck (southern German Pinot Noir and Pinot gris, only 6k btl a year), Chris Santini’s Burgundy and Beaujolais

Day 3 in Beaune: caught a ride to an amazing event dedicated to natural wines: Haut les Mains in Lusigny. Dozens of winemakers converged to host a wonderful tasting at a breathtaking estate. There was music, food, beer, coffee, and cider too!

The tasting was fantastic. Marchand Tawse has 19 different cuvées from all of the Côte d’Or. we had the privilege to taste several of them to get a better hold of the diversity in terroir here.

Day 2: went to a terrific market in Beaune and travelled up to Nuits Saint Georges for a tasting with Pascal Marchand of Marchand Tawse. Pascal is originally from Montreal, but has been in Burgundy for decades.

We’re now in Burgundy and, more specifically, Beaune! First night in, we bought some cheese, charcuterie, and bread and had dinner outside. Paired it with a special bottle I picked up from Lapierre: the cuvée Marvel Lapierre from 2016.

We attended this event with two Americans who have moved to London and own a biodynamic vineyard on Mt Etna (who I met at the Lapierre tasting). We celebrated our last evening with a magnum of Yvon Métras’ 2016 Fleurie. Métras makes highly desired natural wines from Beaujolais.

We ended our last evening in Beaujolais at a weekly event in the town (and cru) of Fleurie, known from producing wines from gamay with wonderful elegance like delicate floral notes. The event includes live music, amazing food, wine, beer, and local artisans/shops.

I also had the pleasure of tasting at Domaine Lapierre. Since his passing, it’s now run by Marcel’s son and daughter, Mathieu & Camille. The tasting included a cool side-by-side of the same cuvée (old vines Morgon 2022), but one with and one without added sulphur at bottling.

Day 3 I had the absolute privilege to taste with a legendary vigneron Jean Claude “Le Chat” Chanudet. He is the winemaker for Chateau Cambon (day 1) and his Domaine Chamonard in Morgon. Learning from both Chauvet and Lapierre, his wine is a great example of flawless natural wine

With the meal I had one wine of many that showcases the age-ability of great Beaujolais. This is a 13 year old wine from the cru of Fleurie made by Sylvain Chanudet. Lots of dried violets, dried cherries, dried leaves, and mushroom. Still lively with more years to go!

Day 2 didn’t have any tastings with winemakers, but did include a fantastic meal at L’atelier du Cuisinier. This is a super traditional spot for the food of Lyon and Beaujolais. It also has a jaw dropping wine list of aged Beaujolais.

The estate was actually originally farmed by Jules Chauvet, who basically kickstarted the natural wine movement in France. A meticulous biologist, his wines were (apparently) vibrant, alive, and still very clean and well made. This is Alex, who is training under Jean Claude.

Our last visit was to Chateau Cambon. Originally a project started by Marie Lapierre (wife of Marcel Lapierre) and Jean Claude (le chat) Chanudet. This land is actually outside of any Crus, but produces top quality fruit.

On the same day we visited the domaine of Christophe Pacalet. Trained originally as a chef, he is related to several key vignerons in Beaujolais and Burgundy like the Lapierres and Philippe Pacalet. He make exquisite natural wines that are both energetic and clean.

In my happy place, Beaujolais. Day 1 we rented bikes and went to Côte de Brouilly, which is on what used to be a volcano. We visited the wonderful Nicole Chanrion, who makes powerful, but elegant and exciting Gamay.

Just booked my flight for Dublin! I’ll be at Trinity College Dublin for about 10 weeks this summer to work on some chapters of my dissertation with @adinapreda! If anybody has tips or leads on finding a reasonably priced accommodation for June and July, let me know.
