Very excited to see my P&P paper with @PriceTheorist and @sometimesabird out! We offer a simple theory (and some empirical evidence) on how harmful content can simultaneously raise engagement and fail to improve utility. Check out Rafa's thread to learn more!
Glad to see our P&P ("A model of harmful yet engaging content on social media") out! We make the simple point that increases in engagement != increases in utility Content can harm you but increase your engagement if harmful content and time spent online are strong complements

We randomly hide toxic content on social media & find a 23% reduction in content consumption on Facebook and a 9% reduction in ad consumption on Twitter (beyond the intervention’s mechanical effect), as well as a decrease in toxicity of content production: https://t.co/tF9uiRtUSl
