Greg Carvel yesterday talking about how UMass hockey is growing through facility promos like the ones from
@nesn
and
@spittinchiclets
"We actually just committed a Czech player, and his agent told us that he was really impressed with the Spittin Chiclets video"
@MikeGrinnell_
UMass head coach Greg Carvel did not hold back after tonight’s game against UNH when talking about the controversial non-goalie interference call late in the third period that resulted in the game tying goal:
“We’ve been shown all year long, you can’t touch the goalie; can’t come through the crease and touch the goalie. We get videos every week; every single week we get the same video. It happens tonight and for some reason it’s allowed. So real frustrating, once again, referees”
@MMcCunney
Carvel is about as fair of a hockey coach that exists. All he’s looking for is for refs to be consistent, which they haven’t been in the last couple of weeks. He was the first to admit refs made the right call on Friday night on both high-sticking reversals against his team.
“We do have very good facilities, I’d put them up against anybody’s in college hockey. It’s not why you should go to a school, because of the facilities, but it is a nice compliment.”
Czech player Vaclav Nestrasil announces his commitment to UMass hockey via is his Instagram. Nestrasil is just 16 years old so safe to assume it will be a couple of years until he makes his way to Amherst.

UMass hockey opened its season with a 4-3 win over AIC. Two new faces got on the scoresheet while the rest of the newcomers made an impact on the ice. I detail the importance of the UMass additions for

Big weekend for UMass hockey coming up with a rematch against Merrimack on Friday and a big test against No. 6 Maine on Saturday. Check out my preview here:
"They were in overtime and Dahlin was up top and they ran that play where the D passed it and then went to the backdoor. So I figured let’s give it a try, just with how Lowell was pressuring out, figured there might be a seam there and lucky enough it worked.”
If you were wondering where Ryan Ufko's OT winner came from tonight, it was a play he drew up himself:
“I actually saw it when the Buffalo Sabres did it the other day. It was like two days ago I was just scrolling through Instagram, Twitter."
Coming off of an inconsistent weekend against BU, UMass hockey is looking to straighten their play out against Northeastern tomorrow night. I preview the matchup for
@MDC_Sports
here:
UMass stands pat at 14, but more importantly, they remain at 13 in Pairwise rankings. CANNOT lose at home to Lowell, sweep won’t move them up in PW but a loss would be detrimental to their hope of securing an at large bid as Lowell is the lowest team in Hockey East in PW.
Now that I’ve visited Toscano Rink at UConn, I’ve officially been to every Hockey East rink except Vermont (which I can’t imagine would be high up on the list.) Here’s my ranking of the 10 rinks I’ve been to, and is indisputably correct:
UMass battled back from a 2-1 deficit in the third period but ultimately tied the game 3-3, losing the extra Hockey East point in the shootout. Recap of the game here:
UMass had two goals called back for high-sticking and a snipe from Aydar Suniev that was initially thought to be a goal but was later deemed to have missed the net last night and then are sent to overtime by what definitely COULD have been called goalie interference tonight.
We are incredibly excited to announce that

What would hockey in the MAC look like? Probably not a question that gets asked by many people but with UMass making its move to the MAC, I decided this would be a great time to imagine how hockey could be beneficial for these schools:
Disappointing OT loss to Clarkson for UMass, he’s a couple quick takeaways from the weekend:
-Cannot play down to your opponent, UMass out-skated Clarkson for 45 minutes but let up for the last 10 of the second and first 5 of the third
UMass defenseman Scott Morrow today when asked about being added to the Hobey Baker watch list: “It’s something that motivates me a little bit but the biggest thing is just winning, especially after the year our team went through last year, being at the bottom of the standings.”
UMass has played its best hockey of the season lately, but it will be tested by the No. 1 Boston College Eagles this weekend in a home-and-home series. Check out my preview of the matchup here!
@MelWebster
Agreed Mel. College hockey has lowered the threshold for what is considered goalie interference in recent years, so if you’re gonna call the one against Mercuri last week you HAVE to call the one tonight.
The UMass women’s soccer team played St. Bonaventure to a draw on Sunday afternoon as they celebrated their 11 seniors. I recap the match for

Here we go: playoff time for UMass hockey! I talked a little bit about how the Minutemen got to where they are now and what it’s going to take for them to keep their season alive this weekend. Check out my column here!:
Umass hockey once again remained resilient in the third period against Alaska Anchorage last night. Check out my column on the Minutemen’s strong third periods here!:
If you were wondering where Ryan Ufko's OT winner came from tonight, it was a play he drew up himself:

HOCKEY EAST SEMIFINAL PREDICTIONS:
BC 5-3 over UMass
-as much as I think umass is going to be fired up after the controversial end to the last meeting between the two, this is just BC’s year, they’re too talented.
T-55 minutes until puck drop between UMass and BC at the Mullins Center and the arena is already BUZZING. Crazy atmosphere I haven’t seen since Minnesota State series here in 2021 to start the season.
Providence currently up 2-1 on BU after 2. A PC win means UMass needs at least one regulation win to secure home ice, otherwise it could be an away QF matchup for the Minutemen
Aaron Bohlinger found his home with the UMass hockey team and campus. With the 2023-24 season’s post-season ahead, the senior captain reflected on his four years with the Minutemen.
My feature on Aaron for
@MDC_Sports
below:
UMass 100% got away from the culture that has made it so successful in the Greg Carvel era last season, but the shift in vibes around the locker room has been so apparent all season and this is a glowing quote from Morrow showing exactly why things changed so quickly this year.
@diegofellows
I don’t doubt it, really aren’t any bad rinks in Hockey East, just seems like it would be hard pressed to compete with some of the top rinks on this list.
Cont: “I’m just grateful everyday this year to come to a group that’s really motivated and we’re a winning hockey team and we play the right way. I’m just taking advantage of the fact that everyday we have fun at the rink, when sometimes in the past it hasn’t been like that.”
-Best Kenny Connors and Cole O’Hara have looked all season
-Lucas Mercuri’s gap control on the forecheck and back check are elite
-Taylor Makar is playing really good hockey, just not getting the results to show for it
2/4 not too shabby. Thought we’d see some upsets tonight, UConn gave BC a run for their money but we’re gonna have some exciting semifinal games, BU-Maine is a sick matchup and we’ll see if UMass can get revenge on BC after getting swept by them one month ago.
