That was impressive, South Carolina. Gamecocks swept Florida and did it without a weekend starting pitcher and three starting infielders. That's as good a weekend as anyone can claim all season.
Here are the final conference records for Friday for multi-bid leagues:
B10 went 3-0
SECwent 9-1
P12 went 4-1
ACC went 6-2
B12 went 4-3
AACwent 1-1
SBCwent 1-3
CAAwent 0-2
CUSA went 0-2
Big East went 0-2
Love seeing these massive crowds on campus like we have at Arkansas, LSU and will have tonight at Starkville. Every time someone mentions neutral sites for Supers, I cringe. On campus is what's best for our sport.
First baseball season living with the new wife.
Her: "Is there baseball all day Saturday?
Me: Yep, Sunday too.
Her: Seriously?
Me: Oh, yeah.
Her: Gonna need to speak to the manager
Breaking: Alabama fired head baseball coach Brad Bohannon for, "among other things, violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees. Bohannon has been relieved of all duties and Jason Jackson will serve as the interim head coach."
Vanderbilt may be the best team in the country. Mississippi State might also be the best team in the country. They are playing each other tonight. Ace vs Ace. Best vs Best. No place in the world I'd rather be right now.
Interesting that if LSU had held Paul Skenes to start tonight, he would have been done after 3 innings due to the weather delay just as Ty Floyd was. Instead, Skenes threw a CG leaving everyone else to pitch tonight/tomorrow. Funny how these things go
Multi-bid conference records for all first three regional days:
SEC: 21-8
ACC: 15-10
Pac-12 :9-6
Sun Belt: 8-6
Big 12: 9-7
Big Ten: 5-5
CUSA: 4-4
Big East: 3-4
AAC: 2-4
CAA: 0-4
RPI is designed to compare teams with vastly different schedules without common opponents. Commiteee slotted K-State behind conference rivals that trailed them in the standings & head-to-head, but were ahead in the RPI. Why give RPI priority there?
Final Regional records by conference (sorted by winning %):
SEC 25-10
ACC 16-11
Pac-12 10-7
Sun Belt 9-7
Big 12 10-8
CUSA 4-4
Big Ten 5-6
Big East 3-4
AAC 2-4
CAA 0-4
We expect Hagen Smith to be special, and he certainly was, but how can you not appreciate what Will McEntire does when he gets the chance? He retired eight batters, all by strikeout. The dude just goes out there and battles
Ran though USM campus this morning and detoured by the Pete. There were already people parking at 8 AM for those first come, first serve General Admission berm "seats". The game is at 3 PM. Win or lose, people care about college baseball in Mississippi.
Remember when ESPN used to bring in MLB guys to broadcast the CWS each season? So glad to have some college guys describing the college games this week.
Got to say, seems like LSU is watching all these other SEC schools get the final dogpile and saying, "enough of this sh--. It's our turn." Tigahs gonna be loaded next season.
Excited to head to Hattiesburg this weekend for what promises to be an incredible scene. Am on the lookout for fun stories to tell. Look out Hub City ...
@D1baseball
is coming to your city
T.J. McCants is shaping up as one hell of a comeback story this season for Alabama. The Ole Miss transfer just hit a grand slam, his third homer of the season. Meanwhile, in Oxford, the Rebs could use a homer or two down 4-0 at home to Arkansas State in the 4th.
Will Bednar just had seven strikeouts in a row, rumored to be the most consecutive strikeouts since my apprearance at a college party in 1991 after I shaved my head.
Excited to plant the

flag in Hattiesburg this weekend as

in a Super Regional Showdown. Two great programs in a crazed environment. Can't wait!
Just listened to the interview after the final Scott Berry game at the Pete. Emotioned poured out as he discussed what Southern Miss has meant to him. What a career. What a legacy. So many lives enriched by having him in their lives.
Alabama center fielder T.J. McCants is 2-2 with a single, a double, two stolen bases and two runs scored. The Ole Miss transfer, who had a strong fall and preseason, is carrying that over to opening day. Bama up on Manhattan 4-0 in the 3rd
Not sure a team has ever had a week like the one Alabama baseball just had. You have to hand it to interim coach Jason Jackson and the players who sure finished it in style with a series victory over the nation's fifth ranked team.
I kinda miss the coaches arguing with umpires on close calls now that anything remotely close goes to replay. It's cool that we get the calls right but is it wrong I miss the days of Ron Polk flipping his cap bill around and going bonkers?
So appreciative of the warm greeting
@d1baseball
received coming into Pete Taylor Park today from fans waiting for gates to open. These Golden Eagles' fans are beyond excited about hosting this party this weekend. So much passion for our sport!
This is the first time since 2006 that there has been no regional hosted in the state of Florida. That is just the second time it has happened since the regionals expanded to 16 sites in 1999
For those wondering about Alabama's hosting chances ... in the past 10 seasons, the best RPI from an SEC team that did not host was 2018 Auburn at 14. It was 15-15 in SEC play. Alabama, at 16-14, sits at 10 after today's doubleheader sweep
Sometimes we go to a baseball game. Other times we attend an event. This is more than a series to a lot of 6k plus expected today. The Pete is packed an hour before first pitch. Buckle up!
Oh my goodness, what an impressive ballyard. Had the guided tour, then walked and talked. Really excited to see the new stadium and it does not disappoint
What a surge from Alabama after Jason Jackson became interim coach. Tide is 8-2 under Johnson and has won all three series. Now at 16-14 with a strong RPI heading onto Hoover. Lots to play for next week
Alabama made it interesting getting the tying run to the plate but Southern Miss holds on for a 9-7 victory. Look for content on both clubs later this week on
@d1baseball
Interesting that Miss State needed to sweep top ranked Florida to finish .500 in their league. About to go to CWS semifinals. Trend is to not include those with sub .500 conf records in the field. Maybe, just maybe, conf record should be a factor, but not an eliminating factor
New coach. Rebuilt lineup. Strong pitching staff. Southern Miss is an interesting program to follow as it tries to carve a spot in the postseason picture yet again. Head coach Christian Ostrander details it for us ...
It took me a while, but I'm looking for a ticket on the Kentucky bandwagon. Wildcats are up 10-2 at Louisville in the 3rd (and still batting). Can't wait to watch them versus Tennessee this weekend in a top-four matchup
I sit alone watching WS game 7. I don't have a wife or son to watch with. My daughter went to bed, bored w/ this sport I love. I'm excited about this finish - how it is part of our history - a night we will remember. If you have someone to share tonight with, please do.
It is a work day for a lot of folks tomorrow but there's no way to turn away from this game. Going to be a lot of coffee-laced college baseball fans in a few hours. Can I get an amen?
For me, that was Ginn's most impressive start of the season. Didn't have his best velo, hadn't pitched in 3 weeks, gave his team 6 shutout innings in CWS elimination game
Samford played 3 9-inning games today in the SoCon Tournament, winning them all to take the automatic bid. In the third game, the Bulldogs held Wofford to 4 hits in a 5-2 win.
If you told the locals here they would be one game away from the CWS with Tanner Hall on the mound, they'd be ecstatic. That's the reality as one of the best pitchers in
@SouthernMissBSB
history gets the ball for game two today.
Committee not sticking to geography as much as in years past. Not sure what to make of that. Avoids mismatches but tough for visiting fans and attendance
She looks back at me blankly. “Happy. Sad”. She was repeating my words. “Mom, gone, sad.” These words were hers. She musters a little more, “Dad sad. Dad happy. Madison and Dad, happy and sad.” I don’t think I can say it much clearer, even after 2 years to compose my words. (3/3)
I was kind of surprised the SEC got 8 hosts, just from an optics and spreading the love standpoint. Committee didn't care. RPI was important, with only Auburn at 19 replacing Campbell at 14 among the top 16 RPI teams.
Alabama closes out a 7-2 neutral site victory over NCAA bubble team Troy. After struggling in midweek last season, Alabama went 12-1 in midweek this season.
Southern Coach Kerrick Jackson just did a dugout in-game interview while calling pitches as his team leads Miss St 4-2 Bot 4. Also coaches third so there's not really an ideal time to do interview. Never missed a beat with his interview. Dude can multi-task with the best of them
Heralded LSU freshman lefty Cam Johnson showing off in his 2-inning stint in today's exhibition versus Louisiana. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder pounded the zone 93-97 to strike out all 6 batters he faced. Really advanced freshman who will play a key role on a deep LSU pitching staff
Can't express how impressive Kentucky was this weekend dominating Alabama 23-3 over 3 games. The Wildcats are 11-1 heading to Auburn next weekend. Kentucky, while many have doubted them, looks like a legitimate contender that should see baseball in Lexington this June
Wife just learned abt SuperRegionals
Her: How many more weeks of bsb?
Me: A few more
Her: So the rest of June?
Me: Pretty much
Her: I'm gonna need something special for this
Me: More special than a month of all-day baseball?
Her: Don't worry. Will think of something
Me: Uh oh
Ron Polk got to Mississippi State when few cared about college baseball. Last weekend, MSU unveiled a statue honoring him on a day where a record crowd showed up for a pair of last place teams. Here's my account as Polk headlined Super Bulldog Weekend:
Just confirmed with Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn that starting pitcher Riley Quick had Tommy John surgery today. Quick started Saturday and threw three hitless frames. Brutal blow for the Tide and for Quick, who was poised for a breakout season
I stand corrected. There is a path for MSU to make the SEC Tournament. Should LSU beat Georgia and Vandy beat Arkansas, LSU passes Arkansas as the top seed. MSU would win a Georgia tie-breaker using LSU. So there is some intrigue heading into Saturday
The race for berm seats at Dudy Noble. There was already a line at 9 am. Some in line may not have gone home after last nights game. Regardless, we’re expecting a record crowd today
I'll have some analysis on this later, but they spun the wheel and it landed on non-conference SOS this year. Teams that missed out were 189, 109, 224, 276, 264, 47, and 168 in N/C SOS. Teams that got in were 1, 9, 13, 11, 31, 26
Latest from the newlyweds
Me: Walkoff grand slam. That was so awesome!
Her: Is baseball over?
Me: That game is. There are more on.
Her: Ugh.
Me: Gonna need more enthusiasm.
Her: Ugh. Ugh.
Gonna be a long weekend y'all
I can see how MSU could lose some games early. Lots of new faces, disrupted practice routines, lots of road games. Fine line between excuses & reasons but I could see some early Ls and then they catch fire later.
