New research about news in this month's RQ1 newsletter with @SethCLewis: Scholars looked at 1.7M recommended videos on YouTube, and it will probably not surprise you to learn that its algorithm is much more likely to pull you away from news than toward it.

After we developed the concept of "source proximity," @markcoddington and I wondered if outlets could be distinguished by their mix of sources and evidence: Do alternative media also have alternative epistemologies? Our research suggests yes:

This study builds on efforts to understand what alternative media are becoming by examining differences in epistemology among them and as compared with mainstream media. We find that alternative me...

Last night was the most fun I've had watching a sporting event in years. I kind of feel like my years of futile efforts to explain the phenomenon that is Husker volleyball to my friends were finally vindicated. So proud to be a Nebraskan today!
The tunnel walk to a stadium filled with thousands of volleyball fans 🤩 🎥@BigTenNetwork | @HuskerVB

This is so disappointing from Texas A&M. I literally cannot imagine anyone better than @kathleeno to lead the revival of their journalism program, and they ran her out before she even started. An absolute shame.

The university celebrated its decision to hire Kathleen McElroy to revive its journalism program. She says she’s staying at UT after she felt judged because of her race and gender.

Young adults explain in a new study why they don't pay for online news - not exclusive, too time-consuming, too much commitment. That and other new journalism research in this month's RQ1 from me and @SethCLewis

Maybe you're like me in wishing journalists would adjudicate source claims before writing, rather than presenting contradictory statements and throwing up their hands. Turns out it's a pretty tall order, @markcoddington and I find in this new study 🚨

Contradiction is a defining characteristic of contemporary journalism, despite the risks it carries of raising uncertainty among audiences. Scholars and observers alike have called for journalists ...

I’m pretty sure this envelope is going to my in-laws
On September 29th, 2023, we will send out the last red envelope. It has been a true pleasure and honor to deliver movie nights to our wonderful members for 25 years. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey, including this final season of red envelopes.

This month's RQ1 newsletter features new research by @jnelz on the lack of management support for journalists on social media. Plus soft news as a propaganda gateway, and how involved should news orgs be in news literacy education?

I've sometimes wondered what Twitter would look like if you took it out of the for-profit realm entirely. @nikkiusher fleshes that idea out a bit, and I like Nikki's New Twitter a lot more than what we have:
slate.com
If Musk gives up on it, there’s a way to keep Twitter online, useful, and, crucially, fun.

These are the two crucial paragraphs of this obit. I was fortunate enough to report on his use of his land to repatriate Pawnee remains at the time, and it remains the story I'm most proud of from my (short) career.

Excellent NYT obit for Roger Welsch, Nebraska's legendary bard. In my years as a reporter there, Roger was always my favorite person to interview - funny, brilliant, and cheerfully withering in his cultural criticism. What a loss for the state.

Author, humorist and tractor buff, he quit academia and found fame as a correspondent from the Nebraska heartland for the CBS News program “Sunday Morning.”
