There's a lot to unpack in the 🇺🇸 results. About which voter groups went where. About the candidates. About messaging and strategy. About the fragility or resilience of democratic institutions. But there's one hard truth we need to confront urgently. 1/

It's time to leave this site till it stops serving the interests and the pocketbook of a fascist acolyte. If you want to stay in touch, find me on Bluesky: https://t.co/ifEzXmNOAh Till then: Solidarity. Vorwärts. ¡Hasta siempre! /END

But first: there are a lot of people whose lives will be irrevocably worsened by this result. People of colour. Women. Queer people. And their progressive allies. Hold them, and hold each other close. ✊🏻🌹 4/

At the same time, the social base for a serious socialist alternative is nowhere to be found. That's a bleak picture of the future. But it's the one the evidence is pointing towards more and more. So it's the one we should use to frame our thinking in the years to come. 3/

Ideologically, this is the way the global North is going. In 🇺🇸, in 🇬🇧, in 🇫🇷 and 🇩🇪 and many other countries in 🇪🇺 and beyond. Time and again, it's milquetoast liberalism trying to present itself as the last bastion against increasingly strident fascism. And often losing. 2/

Nobel prize winning economists make for very poor historians, says FT: “Economists are socialised to look down on the rest the social sciences as unserious, but it’s a funny ol’ thing when you reach the end of numbers and bang into an institution. You need new tools, exactly

Hugely looking forward to bringing everything I've learned to this new role. UK/EU geopolitics, skills and education, democratic resilience, the ideas that shape how we understand the world. All of it has its part to play in national strategy. Drop me a line to hear more!

@AnnLimb @Phillip_Blond @MarkMorrin @MikeMavrommatis Thank you also to the LEI's Advisory Board and membership, without whom our efforts simply would not be possible. You've taught me so much about how to make waves in thinktank world: the kind of lessons you only learn when you're digging into the coalface down the policy mines.

There'll be time to take stock of everything I've learned in the coming months. But for now, a massive thank you to my colleagues at the LEI and ResPublica: @AnnLimb, @Phillip_Blond, @MarkMorrin, Andy Forbes, @MikeMavrommatis, Steven Lynch, Maísa Edwards, and Lucy Chandler.

It's been an incredible two-and-a-half years getting to grips with the UK's post-16 education and skills policy. Taking the LEI from the Lifelong Education Commission to its own independent body has been a real crash-course in what it takes to build a new policy start-up.

I don't think anyone needs to wonder how the Holocaust happened & how Nazism was able to reach the Popularity that it did, ever again.

On the money as usual. We need an organisation committed to defending democracy at all costs. Exactly like what the "@Reichsbanner Schwarz–Rot–Gold" tried to be at the end of the Weimar Republic. A broad-church progressive force fighting to save democracy from fascism.

9/ That’s why we need a militant democracy. Ofcom must revoke the licence of GB News. The full, if inadequate, provisions of the Online Safety Act should be activated now. We need emergency legislation to make platforms responsible if they promote incitement.

Yesterday's riots have woken people up to the scale of the far right challenge. But we’re still getting a lot of things wrong. 1/ The fascists achieved something: they have terrorised Britain’s BAME population. I’ve got people contacting me saying they don’t feel safe…
