If you start driving east on the 10 in Santa Monica, it’s like 80 miles of sprawl until it finally dies down a bit past Yucaipa. It’s crazy.

@wil_da_beast630 Latinos in LatAm countries have more nuance regarding Spain. Almost all of them are part Spanish. The urban centers are basically the colonial core with nice churches and plazas, and those are major points of pride. AOC’s wokeness is a testament to her assimilation to the US.

A coffee shop or bakery doesn’t cause it. Also, gentrification impacts minorities differently. It’s pretty great if you’re a homeowner

@sam_d_1995 California’s geographic and climatic twin in Europe was able to do this for less money than the current estimates for CAHSR. Also, this is despite CA having a GDP per capita about 3X that of Spain. We really have no excuses in California and the US more broadly.

@wil_da_beast630 This is the most important square in MX and it sits on the former site of the main Aztec temples. The Spanish, to show who was boss, even recycled some of the same stones to build the cathedral. Literally meant as a symbol of imperialism, but now seen as a symbol of Mexico.

@whstancil I don't understand why we even care about high fast food prices. It's at the end of the day a non-essential luxury. Meanwhile, inflation is cooling quite a bit with grocery prices. If McDonald's is getting expensive, then don't patronize them and simply move on.

@the_transit_guy Mexican food. In some ways it has deep pre-hispanic traditions. In others, like tacos al pastor, it’s more recent fusion. It’s also a large country with deserts, mountains, and rainforests, and the food reflects the geographic diversity.

@upzone_CA Even the person paying $6K per year on a home worth over 1 million dollars is paying a ridiculously small amount. That’s about what I pay in property taxes every year on a house I bought for $371K in 2018. That’s how broken Prop 13 is.

@DKThomp Some people in my extended Hispanic family got into crypto and were wiped out. On a personal basis, I didn't see a story of historically marginalized people who resorted to crypto to bypass "the man". What I saw was greed, and the unrealistic expectation of riches from nothing.
