Stunning data. One thing that is interesting is the social experiment this provides, since there are also 37 million Mexican-Americans, and when you look at the data, Mexican-Americans behave quite well in the US. Institutions matter!

Wiener has done a lot of good on the housing front, but this was clearly a mistake, and a relic of the 2-year window of political peak wokeness from 2020 through 2022. Accepting more disorder to make some graph on racial disparity look better was a bad bet.
NYT magazine story out today makes clear that this law Scott Wiener championed made it much easier for human traffickers to pimp out teen girls

The automatic response from local authorities to homeless encampments, copper theft, smash and grabs, crazy driving, and catalytic converter thefts is “there is nothing we can do about it”. And now it has come to this. Extremely tragic, yet not surprising.
This piece is utterly horrifying -- how California and Los Angeles's utterly inept and uncaring government does nothing to put a stop to a three-mile strip of underage street prostitution, dubbed the "Kiddie Stroll" by local cops.

Housing theory of everything applies here. In a place like Coastal California, home values of $1 million for a starter home are fantastic for the boomers and Xers that bought 30+ years ago, but terrible for their kids. It's why nasty feuds break out over inheritances.
Many older folks (even many in their 30s who haven’t set foot on campus in years) don’t grasp this & may never: our politics are about to get *far more radical *economically in the coming years, on both the left & the right. Zohran is a sneak preview. You don’t have to like it.

There is now a large upper-middle-class, many of whom do not have kids and thus kid-related expenditures, and they’re willing to bid up the price of exclusive experiences. There’s no grand conspiracy here. Just simple supply & demand.
1993 tickets to the 100 level for the World Series cost 67 dollars and accounting for inflation 152 dollars today. 2025 a tickets to the 200 level is 11,000 plus tax If this isn’t a reflection of the greed we allow to happen today. We need ticket price regulations

The new right is full of Luddites who make strange bedfellows with progressives when it comes to new technology and economic dynamism.
People say that we shouldn’t worry about AI wiping out jobs. The jobs will just change, they say. But the whole point of AI is that it removes the human component entirely. The jobs aren’t going to change. They’ll just disappear. AI will make like 10 people into trillionaires.

We will obviously need to turn the page with Trump supporters and let bygones be bygones. But my ideal candidate is a centrist on social and economic issues yet a hardliner in holding this shitshow of an administration accountable. There is voter demand for accountability.

The few sparks of liberty that ignited (Athens, Rome, etc.) eventually died out. And then, miraculously, one spark

In a alternative timeline, Kamala is in office. It’s a non-eventful first year, but the unemployment rate is steady, the inflation rate approaches 2% because there is no idiotic trade war, and the independence of the FED is respected. It doesn’t take much to be better than Trump
In an alternative timeline, Kamala Harris is in office, by now over 5 million gang members are in the country, Elon is in prison, Trump is dead, X is controlled by the DNC, I'm dead or in a gulag, your family is being rounded up, about to be murdered. We were that close.

Look, I get it. We have two options when it comes to voting, and I can agree to disagree with a Trump voter who thinks he was somehow the lesser of two evils. However, I can’t wrap my mind around the ~30% of voters who adore him. Like wtf, he’s a legitimately terrible person.
Trump: He did not hate his opponents. He wanted the best for them. That's where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponent and I don't want the best for them. I'm sorry

Investors aren't buying the story that Trump is selling. It's ludicrous to slash rates, which is inflationary, at a time in which we have the highest effective tariff rate since the Great Depression. You also shouldn't cut taxes when you're almost $40 trillion in debt.
The bond market has completely rejected the Fed’s rate cut. Yields have ripped higher following an initial drop on the rate cut announcement. The rate cuts had the exact opposite effect of what the Fed wanted. Mortgage rates will now spike.
