One thing I've seen a lot in med school is the assumption that students and patients are not overlapping populations. Lots of statements about how we need to learn to understand the patient experience since we've never had it. That's super alienating to a lot of folks. 1/

One thing from my surgery recovery I keep coming back to is how awful it felt for providers to start exams on me (pulling up my gown, exposing my body, pressing on incision sites) without waking me up or asking for consent.

Incredible turnout and effort with next to no recognition from the mainstream media. Indigenous communities face immense barriers in accessing voting and continue to show up.
With a lot of talk about Native voting in Arizona. I thought I would share 2 maps. The left is a map showcasing all 22 tribes in the state. The right an updated 2020 voting results maps by precinct. This give you an idea of how Indigenous communities voted in the 2020 election.

I recognize the incredibly stressful demands on medical providers but when you have a patient who can be woken up, there’s no excuse for starting exams (especially sensitive or painful ones) without a warning and there’s no reason to snap at your patients for asking for that.

My white coat ceremony is tomorrow and it’s bittersweet. I’m proud I made it here and thrilled to celebrate with loved ones. I’m devastated that many of the people I want to celebrate with are dead. It’s a special kind of grief to achieve a milestone and be surrounded by ghosts.

This kind of overgeneralization really alienates students who have or have had serious illnesses and/or disabilities, and unfortunately it seems super common.
A med school prof said to us on week 1, “You’ll never really know what your patients are going through, because almost none of you have ever had a serious illness by the very nature that you got into med school and didn’t have illness weighing you down.” Think about that a lot.

Discussing abuse and violence is necessary in medical education. But conversations about intimate partner violence or child abuse should begin with naming that there are students who are survivors or currently impacted, and should have discreet ways for students to opt out.

I am glad this perspective was helpful. Especially for painful or sensitive exams patients will likely either wake up or have a hazy and disconcerting memory and that’s never good for anyone but in particular this can be retraumatizing for patients with a history of assault.

Deeply grateful for the people I've found in med school who advocate for justice. The onus should not be on us as queer & disabled students of color to educate about homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and racism. But it is, so we do it, and I'm just happy not to be alone.

I've realized is that there is no clear way to access information about how medical schools are handling COVID19. I wish every school had a clear webpage that stated what their current situation is (virtual, hybrid, in-person) and how they are assessing the situation.

9/11 was traumatic in many ways. I was targeted for my assumed religion. Kids threw ketchup at me, saying the “blood of Americans” was on my hands. People lost loved ones that day and in the years of violence that followed.
My heart goes out to everyone who is hurting today.

I was really excited to see a case example that included mental health concerns in my problem-based learning group today. However, we were instructed to not discuss that aspect of the case because it wasn’t as important as the metabolic pathways we were studying 🙄

In every single clinical rotation I’ve had, multiple patients have listed fear of eviction as the most pressing issue in their lives. Yes, including my pediatrics rotation. No, I wasn’t just talking to the parents.
And rent increases without wage increases just keep happening.
The housing crisis doesn’t just impact adults. And many children are well aware of what’s going on.
Researchers have found that eviction is associated with greater odds of poor health risk, hospital admissions, depression, missed school days.
