Mouth taping has gone viralโ€”7M+ views and 1 in 10 adults in the US have tried it. But scientific evidence is scant, and for some, risk outweighs benefit. We explore the facts and dangers in the latest episode. #SleepScience #MouthTaping

Mouth breathing during sleep is not just undesirable; it is actually dangerous. On the latest episode of the Huberman Lab Podcast, I discuss why it's important to be a nasal breather, especially during sleep:

Each line represents one participant -- on the left, their average sleep satisfaction when vertical taping (treatment condition), on the right their average sleep satisfaction when mustache taping (control condition). Two participants saw large improvements from mouth taping,.

There is a good deal of individual variation between participants. Some see large improvements and others see none or decreases in sleep quality. For example, this chart shows changes in self-reported sleep score for 15 early participants:

They also get a $7 Amazon gift card to buy tape, entry into a raffle for an Apple Watch Series 10, and the glory of supporting science.

At the end of 30 days, each participant gets a personalized report showing whether taping made a measurable difference for them. It looks something like this:

Participants receive 30 nights of randomized taping assignments, and track their sleep with either an Oura, Whoop, or Apple Watch. They can also optionally track their snoring (with SnoreLab app) and changes in their facial structure (with before and after photos).

The Big Taping Truth Trial is trying to cut through the noise by doing a randomized controlled trial, with a self-tracked protocol that anyone with a sleep tracker can follow from home.

Despite its surging popularity, there has been surprisingly little research about the efficacy of mouth taping. The few existing experiments where participants wore mouth tape during sleep were relatively small (20-50 people) and focused on populations with sleep apnea or asthma.

Others advise against it since there is "no evidence to support mouth taping." In this case, though, no evidence suggests a lack of research rather than research that has discovered no effect.

Mouth taping has exploded in popularity over the past couple years, especially on TikTok and in biohacking circles. People claim it does everything from improving sleep quality to alleviating snoring to even making your jawline look more like a Chad. But are these claims true?

In case you haven't heard yet, we've got an exciting study going on right now. It's the first large study investigating the mouth taping trend and whether mouth taping during sleep is effective in the general population. It's called the Big Taping Truth Trial.

Curiosity is one of the key traits that makes us human. We are smart and able to learn and improve due to our curiosity. For our ancestors, it enabled survival. For us, it enables survival, but also art, beauty, and science.
