I wrote an essay about Cubao, the art deco ancestral house my family lived in, my upbringing there, its impending destruction, death, & Cubao's liminality. My most autobiographical work yet! Maraming salamat kay .
@kasukalan
(idol!!) for commissioning me!
In particular, she was being harassed by Japanese ultranationalists who constantly sent her hate mail and death threats after her book’s release. When she died, the book had already been out, and she was researching for her book on the Bataan Death March which was never released.
it's crazy to me that in the philippines commuting is just universally understood as a kind of relentless and unforgiving torture we just have to endure everyday, while in other countries it's just... traveling 😭😭
Calling Filipinos "stupid" for voting for BBM and for "forgetting" is not just condescending and insulting to the toiling masses, but also leaves the Marcoses off the hook. It is not "stupidity", it is a decades-long campaign of historical revisionism, lies, & fascist propaganda.
underrated/undernoted filipino english features: using "in fairness" instead of "to be fair", and using "at the same time" as a conjunction instead of an adverb ("I'm happy at the same time sad" instead of "I'm happy and sad at the same time")
really amazing how, despite filipino society's conservativeness with women's bodies, we all chose to name this pastry pan de regla and pan burikat, and this flower puki-reyna and pukingan 😭
Once you see how articulate the every day Filipino is when expressing their struggles and resistance in their own language, it becomes clear why the education and legal system being in English is precisely part of the government's imperialist and class interests.
I find it funny (very emblematically colonial) how there are three universities in Manila that are just named the same thing but in English (University of Manila), Filipino (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila), and Spanish (Universidad de Manila).
why do we filipinos just accept that there are trucks and jeeps that blast r4pey porn/hentai sounds on the road... "yamete kudasai"... kahit "wag po tito, bata pa po ako"?? literally p3dophilic. nakakadiri
tbh, we don't give enough credit to Rosemarie Vega for being a working-class Filipino queen who completely rejected & flipped the patriarchal and colonial narrative of the Asian-woman-coerced-to-marry-a-disgusting-white-man, and for being celebrated for it. A feminist icon?
Sana we'd preserve our local harp culture. My Lola says her hometown (Camalaniugan) was once famed for having the best harpists in Cagayan, but they all quit due to poverty. Sad how what was one of the most popular instruments here has almost disappeared in just two generations.
honestly? i am obsessed with capiz shell windows... filipinos went off so hard on this. i mean, mother of pearl as window panes?? how effortlessly elegant, how simple yet gorgeous...
Would like to emphasize this as the narrative the tweet presents is that it was what she had researched & wrote about which drove her to suicide, not Japanese ultranationalists & fascists who made her life a living hell, people who are still alive (and are in the tweets replies!)
The fact non-Filipinos & bigoted Christians are trashing on this is so ignorant. The Philippines has multiple denominations such as the Aglipayans, MCC, and more that are centered around LGBTQ+ inclusivity. We have gay and trans clergy. Our first pride was organized by a church.
Ph history is crazy bcos Isabelo de los Reyes, the founder of the anti-colonial Filipino nationalist church (Iglesia Filipina Independiente), was also the first socialist in the Philippines, & his mother, Leona Florentino, was also the first recorded Filipina poet & a lesbian 😭
The way the shots of "old Manila" are actually of Bataan and not even Manila/Intramuros because any vestige of a truly historical Manila has not existed since the Second World War and no one still wants to face the fact that our capital is a city of ruins on top of ruins. Emsz 😝
am i just stupid because im only finding out now that the Philippine National Railways used to operate train stations all the way from LA UNION to fucking BICOL but it all just went under disrepair 😭😭😭 sorry this is just blowing my mind!!! 😭 😭
do you guys think albanians know that one of our most important and canonical literary texts in the philippines is just, for no reason at all, set in albania lmfao
I say this with all sincerity & seriousness. If you wish to empower Filipinos politically/economically in the 21st century, help them, esp young ones, understand Bitcoin. Positive social transformation empowers all. Lasting/sustainable people power empowers each/every individual.
anyways adding to this, i legit think you could make a whole thread of bubblegum barbie pink historical buildings here in the philippines 😭😭💖💖
Colegio de Santa Rosa, Intramuros
Church in Villa Escudero, Quezon
Dimaukom Mosque, Maguindanao
Bernadino Jalandoni Museum, Negros
I love how much more expansive Tagalog adjectives are.
"Bayot" is not a fucking slur. "Bayot" is just the bisaya word for "bakla." And neither is "bakla" a slur! What the fuck is wrong with westernized petib liberals equating lower class terminology as slurs? They have "negative connotations" because WE have negative connotations!
this carinderia discourse happening right after the benilde tiktok discourse, the anik-anik discourse, then the batang kalye discourse is so funny. parang nasa isang south park episode tayo tungkol sa petiburgis.
TOMBOY are TOMBOY. BAKLA are BAKLA. Why can't this be respected? Why do we have to destroy our own indigenous gender variance by cutting tomboy & bakla up & forcing them into Western ideas and definitions? Why do we have to kill these indigenous words & use Western ones instead?
my headcanon is that he's an old gay bear whose partner died thats why hes so quiet (and why he was so nice and helpful to anna who is a LESBIAN child...)
Another Torre de Manila. This would completely dwarf Manila's iconic clock tower & dominate the skyline from Intramuros. Does our history and heritage not deserve respect? Do Manileños not deserve a beautiful city? Is it only the rich who deserve anything like this hideous condo?
whoever called brazo de mercedes (arm of mercy) that name needs a raise bcuz what an epic and fitting name for an egg dessert that arose from the excess of egg whites used in building churches in the philippines
I'll never forgive the writers of Avatar for making Hama, one of the last surviving women from a genocided nation, a villain, & turning bloodbending, a technique she developed in anti-imperialist struggle, an inherently bad thing. She was a feminist icon & deserved better!!
I actually love hearing casual mistakes in Tagalog from those who natively speak other Philippine languages. Mixing up "sa" with "ng", "sirado" instead of sarado, "h"'s left silent. It's a mark of their origins, something that lays Tagalog bare as a multiplicitous lingua franca.
This is stupid. An idealist conception of decolonizing national culture. Nat'l culture should not be based on superficial nativist aesthetics which romanticize the precolonial, but based on revolutionary ideas rooted in the masses. There is no point to reverting back to baybayin.
I wish petit-bourgeois Queers would stop treating "tomboy" and "tibo" like dirty words, and "lesbiyana", and especially "sapphic", as if they're "more proper." They're not. Tomboy and tibo are perfectly valid labels, & in fact the labels the LGBTQ+ masses are most familiar with.
The fact that this "activist" and "social anthropologist" misconstrues Sassa Gurl's expression as bakla as mockery of trans women says enough for the ways in which Western queer rhetoric erases indigenous bakla narratives and marginalizes us.
The non-consensual disclosure of Mx. Peejay's diagnosis & their overnight transformation into a viral laughing-stock are both rooted in the ways people treat gender-diverse & neurodivergent people as public property. Gosh, treat them with the respect of privacy they deserve!
you do not know what a bad commute is until you have commuted in Manila. everything from the impenetrable system of routes and stops, to the terrible and non-existent infrastructure, to the pollution, to the traffic, and to the extreme weather... it is a daily via crucis...
BGC has like the worst energy of all of Metro Manila’s areas. Every one who likes being there is evil and every time I go there I feel nauseous and just think of this image.
I’ve been fixated lately on Manila’s constant struggle between its own heritage and our government's negligence. Last night, I wrote this journal entry (slightly edited) after a convo with a friend. This morning, I wake up to our Post Office burning. I’m so heartbroken. ☹️💔💔
Mnl is sacrificing culture for condos $$$.
How perverted or fucked in the head do you have to be to witness a protest against this fascist charter change and comment on nothing but the protesters' bodies and if you're attracted to them? The layers of male entitlement and political insensitivity.
Losing my mind again over how hard Filipino literature is to access or buy. Out of print books that libraries don't have or are being sold by people at ridiculous, exorbitant prices. Books that *are* in print but I can't buy because their publishers won't update their pages. Jfc.
Seeing petit-bourgeois–bourgeois Filipinos uncritically supporting jeepney phaseout while rejecting transport workers' strike in the name of "the environment" over the people is such a clear-cut example of ecofascism in the Philippines.
I scanned Isabela Banzon’s Lola Coqueta into a PDF anyone can access bcuz I know how hard it is to find a copy of this phenomenal book these days 🫡🫡 enjoy and long live filipino literary piracy hehe
Ika nga ni Chingbee Cruz: "[In the Philippines,] piracy is a crucial means by which we are able to bust the barricades and gain access to knowledge, culture, and information that would otherwise be inaccessible to many of us."
yeah nakakatawa na sa tapat ng spoilarium but i just saw someone call this... "bourgeois"? girl its a free initiative to engage ppl in art spaces. mej weird, sure but in a country where art+public spaces r so underfunded, pls give the underpaid interns who came up w this a break.
No, and I find it ridiculous that ppl on here blame others for liking rain rather than the government & capitalism which fails at protecting people from natural disaster. It’s such a pseudo-progressive take. It’s like saying you’re insensitive for liking food because ppl starve.
no one:
filipino italics in short stories: As Maria looked out her 𝘣𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘰, her heart fluttered with 𝒌𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒈 as she saw & heard Juanito play a 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘢 from below. She felt like a true 𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒈𝒂 & her 𝓹𝓮𝓴𝓹𝓮𝓴 bloomed like a 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘢 ✨
This is such a stunning find of queer+women's history in the Ph. Just to add, I'd wager many, if not most of these were taken in elevated, pageant/drag settings, and not how these people dressed everyday. They probably weren't like the Western trans person we might think of today
one day the cavite jokes we're all making on this app will all be problematized by some caviteña's thesis on how cavite's history and politics have all led to this and i am rooting for her...
i want a podcast on filipino literature where one's a writer in filipino, a writer in english, then a writer in a regional language, and it's all very insightful and educational but now and then they bicker about the politics of writing in their respective languages
It's bizarre to me that bullshit Western "breaking gender roles" rhetoric has entered the Ph with skirt-wearing, eyeliner-donning, & nail-painting TikTok boys when we live in a society where transfem/bakla ppl are already hypervisible irl & on media. What are you breaking?
This actually isn't funny at all. Like not just gross and weird, but corny as fuck. And I don't want to make any insincere "I hate gays" joke, bcuz this sense of humor is honestly a problem amongst many Filipino LGBT progressives, and spreading jokes like this only normalizes it.
I hate it when ppl think this is anti-capitalist or "woke". You don't fight capitalism to make sure your individualist ass doesn't have to work, you fight capitalism so work is no longer slavery. To not dream of labor is to dream of being the oppressor, to put the labor on others
our variety of english as pinoys is just as deserving of recognition and respect as other varieties, from indian english to irish english!! in the same breath, ipaglaban natin ang isang lipunan kung saan ang ingles ay hindi nakikitang mas importante sa ating sariling mga wika <3
the latter is such a distinct usage of the phrase, i'm surprised i've never seen it really noted in discussions of philippine english. i'm pretty sure it's supposed to analogize "at the same time" with "pati" or "at saka"
TIL Filpino "bistek" comes from Spanish "bistec," a 19th-century adaptation of English "beefsteak," instead of directly from English via the Americans. I always thought it was a Filipino adaptation of the word, apparently it came from Spanish way before American colonization!
As in her totally iconic rejection of the no-neck dude represents Filipino women rejecting gendered imperialism/sex colonialism. She's this immensely witty woman fuckin owning this gross white dude. I feel like there's a deeper reason we celebrate her so much as Filipinos tbh lol
theres literally a scene where he tells her to shave her legs and she gets so pissed lmao. "why don't you shave yours then as well?". god she inspires me tbh
if anyone wants any history, debuts were initially much more explicitly like a wife-auction event where the daughter's coming of age was equated with her readiness to be a wife. they're basically still the same, a presentation of a daughter's ripe femininity.
hello po~! i hate it when people reply like this on twitter, explaining something in the most fake-friendly yet passive aggressive way possible to avoid conflict while also being bitchy! hope this helps po ☺️☺️
What's even funnier is that Universidad de Manila wasn't even established during the Spanish colonial era, but in the 90s, so its name is really just colonizer nostalgia rather than historical preservation. Also, even Wikipedia disambiguates these colleges because of their names.
i hate malls btw and i hate how central they are to filipino recreation i hope every single mall in the philippines is bulldozed during the revolution or converted into public housing or parks or some shit fuck malls genuinely
>condemns settler colonialism and imperialism
>proceeds to also condemn the armed resistance against it
where is the science in the politics... what are you guys doing in polsci... memorizing the names of the presidents?
a lot of men are shit at sex because they're not actually having sex, they're just trying to reenact porn. detached, mechanical, derivative. sensation divorced from feeling. devoid of true intimacy.
LIKE WHY WERE THEY WORKING DURING THE FKNG SPANISH COLONIAL ERA BUT NOW THEY’RE ALL JUST TRAIN TRACKS RUSTING IN THE GRASS LIKE THIS IS JUST SO ABSURD TO ME LMFAO third world country things…
Besides BGC being the dystopian hyperconsumerist mini-Singapore that it is, it's crazy how it was the main center for three detention centers full of tortured political prisoners during Martial Law, a crucial & haunting piece of history that shitty ass district never brings up.
My burgis relatives are actually crazy. I'm trying to explain the importance of a fully Filipino higher education and they can say nothing but "But do you really think that the Filipino language is for that? That it's rich and intelligent enough for that?" The colonial mentality.
The harp was nearly as ubiquitous in Filipino culture as the guitar, especially before WW2. It's a staple in stereotypically Filipiniana interiors, and is depicted so much in Filipino literature and painting. Now, though, it's exceedingly rare to actually meet harpists.
so many of you tibaks are way too open about consuming pornography. it's one thing to consume it, it's another to publicly post about it on your natdem twitter. don't you know the line of proletarian feminists, maoists, and the party on pornography? how shamefully liberal.
i get why bottoming is seen as this submissive and weak thing bcuz of patriarchy and whatever but its crazy because the actual rituals and discipline that being a bottom/bottoming requires is some samurai shit fr
