The idea of looking at the Americas from south to north comes from Uruguayan artist Joaquín Torres García. He created the inverted map of the Americas and coined the phrase “Our North is the South” (“Nuestro norte es el Sur”), challenging Eurocentric and North-centered worldviews
So many important take aways from that performance, but I just want to point out that he named the countries in America in order from South to North. He literally turned the map on its head and deconstructed the idea that the Global South is somehow less than. Powerful messaging!
