Back in the 1990s, U.S. foreign policy elites looked on the Balkans as stuck in the past, way behind the “civilized” world. Perhaps, however, Serbia etc was/is ahead of us, and we’ll catch up one day soon.

The passing of the great Paul Lowe is a tremendous loss for so many people and for Bosnia. His haunting photos from the siege of Sarajevo are on the covers of the English and Bosnian editions of my book. An inspiring teacher and friend to multitudes, gone way too soon.
