One of the most underrated components of LBJ's Civil Rights legacy is Fortas' role in the Miranda ruling, which was a, dare we say, originalist, decision invoking the spirit of the Bill of Rights that police are malevolent and even criminals deserve protection from them. -OS

@lyndonbajohnson LBJ, it may have been that way when you passed … but the decades since have been an s-show. Thanks to the Rehnquist and Roberts Courts Cops can basically do whatever they want with little check on their authority.

The whole architecture of American law inherently distrusts the competence and good intentions of law enforcement -- and *that's a good thing.* -OS

We need to get these mass-produced as our alternative to the "Back the Blue" bumper sticker. Because it's more historically accurate and patriotic. -OS

Sorry, but the United States was founded as an anti-police state. That's why our constitution placed strict limits on police power and why our justice system places the burden of proof on the state. -OS

This is neither a matter for interpretation or debate, ICE agents with masks and no badge numbers cuts agaisnt the very core or of our foundational principles. It's worse than un-American, it's anti-American. -OS

Let us just say again that our founders, who rebelled against the British for allowin any British official accused of a crime in the 13 Colonies to have his trial moved to London, would be very against a federal law enforcement agency hiding the identity of its officers. -OS

Today following outreach from @thejusticedept, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago. The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk

Also a damn sight better than your Clint Murchisons or HL Hunt's who tripped over an oil spurt in the family cotton patch and got rich overnight despite being total fucking morons. Give us all the Bushes if you'll take away the Dunns and Wilks. -OS

We feel two ways about HW Bush -- he was a fake Texan. But he won his seat in Houston at a time when the suburbs were full of New Jersey white collars who were the middle management of Exxon. And those people are better than Mr. Fuckstick who moved to Tomball from Maryland. -OS

The guys who wanted to chair big committees (not just the committees that Southerners used to stop civil rights, but the committees that actually held the purse like Ways and Means) or maybe run for President knew they couldn't be Massive Resisters. -OS

The difference is Texans owned oilfields in both states. Oklahoma was a backwater where no one cared about Cletus waving the stars and bars. Texas was a rich state with guys who have to be presentable in a NY Bank, a sitting POTUS, and politicians with presidential ambitions. -OS

@lyndonbajohnson Texas Democrats must've had some really good local newspaper coverage in the 1960s and 1970s, I never understood how they could stay away from becoming like say Oklahoma during the Civil Rights debates.

David Shapiro, Yarborough's chief aide (all his personal papers are at the Briscoe Library on UT's campus), kept a hit list of Ralph's "enemies of the labor-liberals" and LBJ was usually at the top of the list. It drove Shapiro mad that LBJ cleaned up with AFL-CIO voters. -OS

LBJ and Yarborough never got along, and it was mostly Yarborough's fault. He was purist who couldn't stand the compromises to industry that LBJ made. The way to understand them: Yarborough cared more about being right than winning elections. LBJ liked to win elections. -OS

Really the lesson of our careers of teaching and research are that the conservatives who won Texas actually knew fuckin' ball so that thirty years later they could hand the state on a silver platter to a bunch of fuckin' cretins. -OS

Bentsen wouldn't have signed the Southern Manifesto even if he was still in Congress in 1956. The Shiverscrats were actually smart (an art lost on the Modern Texas Conservative). The only Texans who signed were the true fuckin' yeehaws from the pines like Dowdy and Dies. -OS

Bush was an old WASP who knew the value of kissing ass. After he took all the wrong people's advice and got his ass kicked in 1964, HW sought out LBJ's advice on how to run in 1970 (unfortunately for Bush, Benstsen took out Yarborough in the primary). -OS

There multipke photos of LBJ with every President around him from FDR until HW Bush -- save one: there's no photo of LBJ and Carter (which speaks to how obscure Carter was until he won the Dem nomination). Absolutely none of those photos are rare. -OS
