Casually came out to my dad. Said I was bringing my boyfriend over on Father’s Day bc I wanted him to meet him and he said “of course that’s fine.” It might not seem like a lot but I am very very happy. Verge of tears happy.
So they’re meeting today instead.
Also should mention here that I had to come to my mom four times, the last was telling her about my bf. My parents are divorced. My dad and I don’t have a “talking” relationship. He knew, sure. Him knowing and me telling are two diff things.
Hey y'all, I know many queer writers of color have been impacted by COVID-19, having to cancel readings and book tours and more. It's devastating and it's nobody's fault. So I wanted to help any way I could with this Queer Writers of Color Relief Fund.
“Are you working on anything new?” “How’s the book doing?” “How many books have you sold?” “What’s next for you?” “Why poetry?” “Are you working on anything new?” “I heard poets don’t make a lot of money.” “Are you working on anything new?” “Are you working on any”—
So... I did it. I created a master list of queer poets of color. You can't edit it, but you can comment. So feel free to comment more poets or changes and I'll get to them asap. Thanks to everyone who contributed via questions. This is a collaboration.
Just bc people did horrible things to you in your career claiming “that’s just the way it is” doesn’t mean you have to do the same to those who come after you
This is so crazy to me. As the biggest poetry institute in the world it is literally your job as staff to say and do something. When has it ever not been your jobs not to say something? Did y’all not out out a BLM statement? Did y’all not publish multiple stop Asian hate pieces?
I am excited and terrified and ecstatic and nervous to share the cover of my debut book of poems, A Shiver in the Leaves🍃 from
@boaeditions
which drops September 27th!!!
Okay friends! As of today, here’s the list of 2022 forthcoming poetry books by queer writers of color.
If you want to be added or if I’m missing peeps, feel free to comment below or dm me. This includes chapbooks and self-published ☺️
“I want a son, / which might be weird given I am newly in love, / given that we are Black. Isn’t it irresponsible / to raise a child in this city of mammoth hills // and Mt. Rainier teething away at the sky?”
Pretty pumped to have a poem in
@parisreview

Police are going to protests undercover. Police are going to protests undercover. Police are going to protests undercover. Police are going to protests undercover.
Don’t know if it’s happening in every city, but you should know that it’s happening in some cities.

Look at the choice of of words these literary institutions are using to talk about Mosab Abu Toha. “Arrested.” “Taken into custody.” Those are descriptions used to remove blame from Israel and the IDF and placed on Mosab.
I wanna compile a list of poetry books by Black writers that gets you thinking about justice, abolition, racial history, and more along these lines. If y’all think of any, drop them here please. 🤗
Idk who needs to hear this but the way a poem is scored on the page—the structure—is the reader’s first entrance into the poem. The title is the second. Neither should be taken lightly.

Hi Editors, just reminding you that we are gatekeepers. What we decide to publish inadvertently creates trends. So diversify who you publish; don't publish the same people three times over. One of our duties is to foster the next community of writers.
“My mother sits in the hospital in San Antonio, / motherless—my mother is now a mother / without the longest love she’s ever known.”
Happy to have a poem in
@POETSorg
. Thank you
@mobrowne
for giving my poem the opportunity to see the world.
My poem, “My Mother, My Mother”
Welp it was honestly a good time. My dad talked his ear off. Lol. He was clearly very happy to meet him. Boyfriend said he had a great time. As we were leaving, my dad told him “welp I know this won’t be the last time I see you.” And then, “Y’all take care of each other.”
Hi, if you’re an editor of color and your journal, magazine, press, retreat, etc. is currently open for submissions, reply to this tweet with the link and a little info about it.
Writing is hard and if I’m honest, it’s one of the things I love most about it—the labor, the journey, the “click” that happens when you feel the piece fall into place.
Thank god I’m a writer.
My mom read my poem in
@poetrymagazine
, and said, “Wow, that’s deep.” She then asked me to sign the page, kissing me on the cheek, saying, “I’m so proud of you.” The poem is about my boyfriend; she prayed for him this morning.
Y’all know there are writers with full-time jobs that aren’t tied to academia, right? Please give us some time to get back to you. Please give writers who *are* teachers time. Give writers with kids time. Give. Writers. Time. I know we all have things to get done. But still.
