Something a bit different to what most of my followers are used to seeing on my feed, but I have a HUGE announcement!!! I’m representing Durham University on the new series of University Challenge airing this autumn!! More details will follow but I am so incredibly excited!!

Said a very sad goodbye to REGUA after two months, bowing out with a great view of a male Brazilian Laniisoma! Now in the neighbouring state of Espírito Santo, and off to a flyer as I managed to see Cherry-throated Tanager at Kaete Forest, albeit not as well as the mural!

Privileged to be spending 2.5 months volunteering at REGUA in SE Brazil. While the birds have been exceptional (photos coming soon!), the scenery is a close second. Here’s the view from the summit of Pico da Caledonia (with Grey-winged Cotinga out of shot down the mountain!)

Beginning a 9 month bird-trekking trip through South America with a week in Mato Grosso with @norfolkbirdtour. Some stunning birds in stunning scenery in Jardim da Amazonia and Chapada dos Guimarães. Off to the Pantanal proper tomorrow!

After 4 amazing years and more birds than I could ever have hoped for, I have now graduated from Durham University with a First Class degree. Living and birding in County Durham has been amazing, and I can’t recommend the area enough. Onwards and upwards, but I will be back.

Lovely views of the American Golden Plover at Holy Island recently. Birding has been quite slow here, but I have finished my Masters degree so that's something. Hopefully the wind swings east over the next few weeks...

Taken on some survey work in between Easter and some exciting plans in August, to be announced soon… one site in SW Scotland the last two days has yielded Osprey, Cuckoo, a pair of Whinchat, Crossbill and other goodies.

Back in Norfolk for a few days and the roll of rarities continues! Osprey yesterday, then today @norfolkbirdtour and I head to Kelling Water Meadows and have a funny duck pointed out to us - a cracking drake American Wigeon! My first in Norfolk ever!

Utterly shattered from two of the most intense and amazing birding days I'd ever had, @SBO_Jason dragged me out for one more walk, and he pulls out a long-awaited Hoopoe! My spring is off to an absolute flyer of a start, all thanks to Jacob and the whole Dungeness community.

I then caught up with my first Purple Heron in the UK since 2021 over at Pett Level, which gave a very close flyby not long after I arrived. I closed the day on an amazing 17 year ticks, but there was one more surprise in store...

... before heading to @DungenessBO for a reunion with @SBO_Jason via the delightful Woodchat Shrike at Newhaven, my first in the UK since 2022. I didn't think it could get any better, but my first morning at Dungeness yielded Serin, Surf Scoter and Black-winged Stilt!

Utterly mental weekend in the SE. Started off with an overnight drive down from Durham to Broadstairs to finally get the Booted Eagle on my list, before fighting the traffic to get the Least Sandpiper for my second lifer of the day...

Took a much needed break from dissertation to see the absolutely stunning White-winged Black Tern at Saltholme, which occasionally made some stunningly close passes whilst feeding. Not had much time for birding in the last two months so it was nice to finally get back out.

This may have slipped many people’s radars, but there’s apparently a White-winged Tern in Scotland! It’s March!!!

Ordinarily I'd say Western Palearctic twitching is a slippery slope best left unexplored, but I think exceptions can be made! Brilliant views of the unforgettable Spectacled Eider on Texel today with @norfolkbirdtour. Saves a trip to Utqiagvik...

Northumberland strikes again! Fantastic views of the American Buff-bellied Pipit out at Guile Point as it fed along the tideline before it flew to the saltmarsh in the "gap". Great to meet @Mark_A_Eaton too!

Some more photos from an absolutely vintage NE birding day. Winter birding at its absolute best.

A day for the history books in the Northeast today. It's not often that White-billed Diver and Grey-headed Lapwing are the sideshows, but the adult Ross's Gull at South Shields down to a few metres is utterly incomparable. 2025 off to a roaring start.
