7/7 I’ll be talking all about this at IDPcon with my friends at Cortex. You don’t want to miss it. There is going to be a great roundtable discussion on how this works, it’s challenges, and what we still need to learnšŸ‘‡.

6/7 Platform as a Product (and thus platform engineering) is a total flip of this approach. There is reason that PE is such a huge player in the world of DevEx. It genuinely has a gigantic impact on improving the day to day of developers.

5/7 This customer-centric focus is a huge shift from the traditional approach of infrastructure and DevOps engineers (or SREs, Cloud Ops, etc.), who tend to be focused on adding and maintaining infrastructure, ā€œteachingā€ developers how to use it for their needs best.

4/7 This platform team would be responsible for building tight feedback loops across the different application development teams to ensure the IDP is solving their challenges and their major pain points.

3/7 Platform as a Product refers to building the end result of a platform engineering initiative, an Internal Developer Platform (IDP), as a product. This means there’s a dedicated product team (the platform team) that follows established product management principles and,.

2/7 While the objectives might be the same, there are many MANY fundamentals differences. The key one I’ll focus is the core idea of Platform as a Product. The adoption of a product mindset and product management principles in the realm of operations.

1/7 If you read about platform engineering on twitter or reddit, there is still a solid 50% faction that will say, ā€œplatform engineering is just DevOps or SRE rebrandedā€. This couldn’t be more wrong.

Platform Engineering is Product Management. If you're trying to build a platform without understanding what truly sets platform engineering a part from what's come before. You're probably not going to get very far. Don't believe me? I'll be talking about this at #IDPcon this

5) DevOps Benchmarking Study 2023 - Me (with help): Okay, bit cheeky to add this here (and pretty presumptuous). But last week I read this whitepaper I worked on in 2023, and I think there are few things that lay out as clearly the reason why DevOps is failing, and platform.

4) Remote Team Interactions Workbook - Matthew Skelton & Manuel Pais: With the chances of all your platform stakeholders being in the same buildin (let alone the same continent) being basically zero, this less-known book by Matthew and Manuel is a great and super helpful read.

3) Accelerate - Nicole Forsgren, Jez Humble, Gene Kim: If you haven’t read this software engineering classic yet, you need to. Reading it and lessons through the lens of a platform engineer does a great job of demonstrating why platform engineering is so impactful.

2) Team Topologies - Matthew Skelton & Manuel Pais: A very unsurprising addition to this list, Team Topologies is a foundational text of platform engineering, establishing and expanding on many of the major concepts of the discipline, most crucially Platform as a Product.
