OTD in 1935, former Gov. Huey P. Long was fatally shot at the La. State Capitol in Baton Rouge. The "Kingfish" was a US Senator by then, but his firm grip on state politics kept in Louisiana often. Long was allegedly shot by local optometrist Carl Weiss, but this is disputed.

Twenty years ago, OTD in 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in La. near the mouth of the Miss. River as a Category 3 storm, with sustained winds of 125mph. The powerful storm caused a breach of the New Orleans levee system, resulting in flooding in the majority of the city.
