On game day in youth ball, it's 5% mechanics, and 95% competitiveness, attentiveness, effort, and confidence. Players bring what mechanics they have; only the smallest adjustments can be made now, and only what's already been practiced. Everything else is above the neck. ⚾️🥎

Youth coaches: Have your players whip the ball around after an out with none on. It's not showboating. It keeps their mind on the situation, improves team building and confidence, and they learn to pay attention to the ball even when it seems like nothing should be happening. ⚾️

For paying attention, that means an infielder, aware that the bases are now empty, doesn't just put his head down to walk back to his position. He's always alert to the action. So he'll never drop his gaze by mistake in other situations when the ball is indeed live. ⚾️

For keeping a mind on the situation, it means the habit of looking ahead to what will happen. So with a runner on third and one out, batter grounds out, runner scores, the first baseman knows already that now they whip it around, and he just goes ahead and does it. No hesitation.

There's a kid on our Pony team who's new to baseball. He uppercuts. To fix it, we tell him to try to pound the ball straight down to the ground. When he tries it, he hits hard grounders. Today, trying to hit it down, he smoked a beautiful low liner to the center field grass. ⚾️

Look what Lisa got her old man for his birthday. An autographed Alfredo Griffin card! Now there is an object in this house that has been touched by a four-time World Series champ who threw out thousands of major leaguers! ⚾

As of this morning, Williams had hit 38 homers, Bagwell 35, Bonds 31, Galarraga 31, and McGriff 27. In the last eleven or so games before the strike, Matt hit five, Bagwell four, Bonds six, McGriff SEVEN, and Galarraga none! Wow. ⚾️

What a shame. Two days before, the MLBPA had set a strike date of August 12. The Giants and Rockies were both right behind the first-place Dodgers (50-52) in the N.L. West. Between now and the strike, though, L.A. went 8-4, S.F. 5-6, and Colorado 3-9, so they spread out a bit! ⚾️

Ben Paschal started in place of Ruth for these six games, batting cleanup except the last where he and Gehrig switched (so he hit third). In these games he went 7-for-24 (.292), one double, one RBI. It includes 3-for-3 on the last game when the Yankees had already clinched. ⚾️
The Babe played a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium the day before, and didn't start this and the next three. Ruth started all but six games this season. First missed was June 15), then these four, then the very last of the season (second game of a doubleheader). ⚾️

@KFord1957 Goose caught one fly in this game. But he singled and scored in Washington's five-run rally in the seventh that put them ahead 6-4. Gehrig hit a one-out homer in the ninth, and Firpo Marberry relieved while Babe Ruth pinch-hit. Firpo got a fly-out and ground-out for the save! ⚾️

Lisa is almost 5'6" so this can put a ball just under her armpits in her normal batting stance. Richard is almost 5'10" so it will be below his elbows. But, still, much better than tees that only go up to 36". 🥎⚾️
Just ordered a @MarucciSports tee that goes up to 45". It's hard to find ones kids can use to practice on higher pitches. Only $50! Nice that it folds up for easy transport. Cheaper rubber ones don't. ⚾️🥎

Anyone familiar with groundskeeping know what the heck this is? It's on the warm-up field at ESO. 🥎
