At the @CNASdc National Security Conference. Europeans are already No. 1 customers of 🇺🇸 defence industry (35%) — their most important market. Clearly, there is no "Fortress Europe." In fact the EU must develop its own security architecture to bolster transatlantic collaboration.

Today, I provided some thoughts to @PAP_eng on the current state of U.S.-Russia diplomacy. As I noted , the Trump administration's apparent intention to pursue rapprochement with Moscow despite stalling negotiations around the Ukraine conflict strengthen the Kremlin's position.

The United States can make a difference in helping to surmount these obstacles, and its interest in successful enlargement means it should deploy all available tools to do so.

Despite new momentum in the EU enlargement process following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, numerous daunting obstacles still stand in enlargement's way.

It would also strengthen the European Union as Washington’s partner of first resort in addressing rising challenges from Russia, China, and their deepening cooperation with Iran and North Korea.

I argue that successful EU enlargement will serve numerous enduring US interests by promoting stability, prosperity, and democracy in Europe, a key strategic region for the United States.
