'They need cold, clear, free flowing water to thrive, and due to climate change, pollution and dams, all are in short supply.' - Sir David Attenborough It's wonderful to see BBC Wild Isles taking the salmon crisis to a mass audience tonight! Image credit: BBC #WildIsles

Project Manager Callum came across this rare phenomenon on the River Bladnoch in Galloway on Friday. 'Ice pancakes' are unusual in Scotland and most commonly found in Canada, the US, around Antarctica and in the Baltic sea. Specific conditions are required to create them. 1/2

We were out seine netting on the Loch Linnhe. Seine netting is one of our survey methods to monitor sea trout populations across Lochaber. It is always exciting to pull the net in as we never know what we will find. We caught sticklebacks, wrasse, flounder and pollacks as well.π

European eel is a fascinating species that has an amazing lifecycle. Eel numbers have declined significantly in recent years and the species is now classified as critically endangered, so itβs always good to find them in our rivers.

We are fast approaching the end of our survey season so it was good to get a survey done. It isn't always easy to monitor fish and catches can vary every month but if the Trout are present we can usually catch some with a few sweeps of our 40m seine net.ππ

#Electrofishing to monitor #fish stocks on #Corrour's watercourses contributes to our Ecosystem Health Indicators. With @lochaberfish yesterday we had a great catch of #trout & brook #lamprey which indicate high water quality. This method causes no harm to the fish. #biodiversity

We had an interesting and exciting day of electrofishing to monitor a local Freshwater Pearl Mussel population. Salmon and Sea Trout are essential part of the mussels life cycle. Interesting fact: Mussels can live over 100 years!

We were out surveying water voles last week. Weather was lovely and it was nice to be out. We found some water vole signs as well as American mink and otter.
