A SQL based Semantic Data Model describes calculations and relationships in data so you don't have to repeat yourself. Querying a semantic model is much the same as querying a table but without the complexity of the calculations. Here is an example in #Malloy.

Congrats! Set up a "Metastore" on any storage (local, s3, etc) in one command and get updates, consistency, snapshots, time travel. 🤯.

Today we're launching DuckLake, an integrated data lake and catalog format powered by SQL. DuckLake unlocks next-generation data warehousing where compute is local, consistency central, and storage scales till infinity. DuckLake is an open standard and we've implemented it in

Malloy update. We were quiet not to 'jinx' the deal. Malloy project is at Linux Foundation, the Malloy team is at Meta. Malloy now speaks Snowflake, Presto and MySQL support and lots of goodies coming.

Additionally, Google has graciously agreed to move the Malloy project to the Linux Foundation. I will continue to manage the project there.

The folks I’ve met at Meta are brilliant and kind and entrepreneurial. There is very much a ā€œlet’s just do itā€ mentality that meshes nicely with my temperament.

Meta’s necessity drives Malloy’s invention.

Meta’s data needs can shape Malloy into a ā€œcompleteā€ data language. Many attempts at building a betterĀ  SQL have failed. Many have failed because of a lack of expressibility. If we can solve Meta’s data problems with Malloy, we can likely solve anyone’s.

Meta has an amazing reputation of giving back by building/supporting open source projectsĀ  (React, Presto, Llama 3, Pytorch). I’m excited to see Malloy join these ranks.

Building sophisticated things drives sophisticated tooling. Meta seems a perfect, yet unconventional fit.

While this might seem a strange thing for a serial entrepreneur to do (especially after a spectacular success),Ā  a few things are clear to me:Ā  I still have a lot of ideas in data that I would like to see realized;Ā  For a language to be successful, it has to be open source;.

ā€œNecessity is the mother of inventionā€. This coming week I’m starting a new job at Meta to work on Malloy and to bring Malloy into Meta’s internal data tooling.

Back in 2019 the @firstround team helped us tell the story of Looker on The Review. TodayĀ they took things even further, sharing tons of details on how we got to PMF as a part of their new framework to help early sales-led B2B founders increase their oddsĀ

Most people describe finding PMF as an art, not a science. We're here to change that. Introducing PMF Method. After 20 years & 500+ investments, we've worked with iconic founders and created a 14-week intensive experience to help B2B founders build epic companies. Apply by 5/7:

In SnowflakeSQL the following is an error. select one FROM (select 1 as "one"). "one" makes a case sensitive column. one doesn't match, so one is undefined.

Dataviz is hierarchical. Unfortunately, our data tools don't always play along. 🧵
