We are horrified by this brutal attack. Elena Milashina of @novaya_gazeta is part of our @UMWallaceHouse family. She is a dear friend. When you break a journalist’s fingers, the message is meant to silence all journalists. We will not be silent. Elena, we are here.

Elena Milashina is one of us. She is among the bravest of journalists. She is a friend and beloved colleague. This vicious attack must rally us all. As our dear Elana would tell us, there is work to do. @umichWCED @umichigannews https://t.co/0QTgL2luC0

This kind of thing happens at every level of journalism, and it's not right. Now that I'm on "the other side," I frequently see scoops get repurposed without credit, and I get frustrated for the reporter. Giving credit where it's due is free.

Every day on TV I recognize the good work of the people at the @nytimes. Is it too much to ask that they do the same?
