I’m heartbroken for everyone facing unnecessary violence. Charlie Kirk, kids, worshippers, and politicians all shot in cold blooded murder. The selective grief & blame then makes our country more unstable. We must stop hating each other and work towards solutions together.

Another nail in the astrology coffin: 152 astrologers did no better than random chance at guessing people’s charts from detailed info about them. Astrologers helped design the test, and "experts" failed at the same rate as novices. Horoscopes may be fun, but they ain't real.

New LSE study from @lizard_barnacle (MTSU) finds biology undergrads often discuss climate change but lack confidence in proposing solutions. Most avoid talking with skeptics—pointing to the need for more training in science communication. https://t.co/OAUBSCKDbg #ASCB

True failure is not falling short of our goals. It's failing to pursue our most meaningful goals. In the moment, it feels risky to take a chance. In hindsight, our biggest mistakes are the chances we didn't take. Inaction is a recipe for regret. Action is fuel for growth.

In our new study examining over 6700 undergraduate biology students in over 55 courses, we found that emphasizing compatibility between religion and evolution and giving students autonomy over their decision to accept evolution leads to more acceptance.

These results, in conjunction with a long line of studies over the last decade, indicate that having these discussions and being more open and understanding of student viewpoints may increase evolution acceptance faster.

Past research indicates college instructors often avoid any discussion of religion when teaching evolution and may even be dogmatic in their approach to teaching it, coming off as cold and forceful.

Both of these results are in line with social identity and self-determination theory, and are not surprising. But there are important implications.

Additionally, students from all religious & non-religious affiliations had higher acceptance when they reported that their instructors told them it was their choice whether or not to accept evolution.

Specifically, when highly religious Christian students reported that instructors emphasized the compatibility between religion and evolution by discussing religious scientists and religious leaders who accept evolution, these students increased their acceptance.

Disappointment comes from knowing things could be better. Gratitude flows from knowing things could be worse. We don't control events, but we do choose our outlook. Where we focus shapes how we feel. For most people in most places, this is the best time in history to be alive.

The hill I will die on: STEM grad programs MUST teach PhD students how to communicate their science to the public and legislators alike. This is 💯 not a drill.
