There has been some good and bad experiences in between, I will share them once the car can be driven.

The ECU doesn't know who is at where, but counts NE(cam) signals then fires two injectors at once, the distr knows who is about to compress and I am lost in between. My next move is to install a sensor inside the distr to guide on who's about to explode, then I will be guided.

Next is putting together the concept, I have tried a number of approaches including listening for the batch injections, then sending wasted spark, alternating between two pairings while aligning with a fuel signal - all seems to run well, but the biggest hurdle is at start.

Days went by when I had stopped attempts and was purely reading about EMI in automotive environment, then I came across EMI-immune ICs, which can be used to drive the coils from MCU. I ordered one (TC4424) and there has been a great improvement since, no more restarts.

The lack of proper testing tools contributed to this, at one point I drove the coil with one MCU and the other with LCD was close by and it still affected, so I knew it needed physical separation, later I dropped the LCD thing and focused on the restarting issue.

I added another coil and the MCU ran into random restarts, this is the start of real trouble. Weeks went by trying to narrow down on the issue, I figured out it was caused by EMI, but how do I address it? Tried metallic enclosures, RC filters, optio Isolators but no success.

Turns out the seller had given me 2 #52 and 2 #58, says they are usually interchangeable, but I told them 'my car doesn't run and has to be replaced with exact #52', so I got 4 #52. When the MCU drove the coil, I noticed something awkward on the LCD I had connected - scrambled.

I went ahead and purchased the coils and an Arduino Mega(MCU) because it has more interrupt pins which allows better listening of things, got the 4 coils(ex-J) for KES. 10k and the MCU for ~KES. 2k. Put the code together and ran one coil, not bad, it was sparking well except 2.

Once I had I known the target coils, I researched on how to work with them - which there's hardly any info available publicly, so I resorted to use troubleshooting resources used in engine misfires, and such, I was lucky to find a few. I had the basic info, next is basic tests.

I started with probox coils, which didn't fit, it's a Denso coil with some label ending with 40, so they call it #40. Went through others and settled with size 52 for 2RZ/3ZR. Didn't buy them then - I needed to complete my homework on how they are fired and their dwell times.

I already had some DIY trip computer(MPGuino), so I had tapped on one fuel injector + speed sensor and had some experience tinkering with Arduino around the engine. I drafted some workflow, then next was the search for fitting coils.

I have been working on upgrading this Jalopy to semi Coil On Plugs. It started with a rough idea of how it could be implemented, but on searching online I found out the easiest approach was to add a few sensors, but I wasn't going to do that. So where do I start? #corolla #5AFE
