Your effort makes a bigger difference when you focus on fewer things. The same goes for speaking. Don’t try to improve everything in one go. One thing at a time makes progress more meaningful.

Do you think you are bad at presentations? You have a blind spot when it comes to your speaking performance. Self-awareness is key. You are your harshest critic. Focus on what went well, not what didn’t. Build on the positives.

Are you ruining your speaking performance with your narrative? ‘I can’t do this.’ ‘This is stressful.’ ‘What if I fail?’ Negative narratives create negative experiences. Reframe your narrative: ‘This is an opportunity.’ ‘I can do this.’ ‘Time to showcase my knowledge.’

How you open your presentation matters: • Stop giving long introductions • Stop apologizing • Stop opening with an agenda. Instead: • Start with a bang. • Get their attention immediately. • Tell your audience why they should care

The most important skill as a presenter: Keeping to time. You don’t want 10 minutes of material to fit into 5 minutes. Avoid rushing. Know what time you need to hit certain points in your presentation.

99% of PowerPoint slides are pointless • Telling the audience what is coming next • Text the audience could read at home • Reminders for the speaker on what they need to cover Stop making your slides about what you need. Make it about what the audience need.

Bad ways to prepare presentations: • Create your slides first • Script • Avoid the bits you are least confident about Good ways to prepare: • Make everything about the audience • Plan an attention grabbing opener • Be able to deliver without slides (in case tech fails)

If you can say something in 5 words, why use 10? Brief is better. Less for you to remember. Less for your audience to think about. Practice pausing before responding. Pauses keep people in suspense. They make people listen more intently.

Want to become a better public speaker? It's all about the small improvements. Focus on improving just one thing at a time. There is already a lot to think about, don’t add to your plate. Make it easier by keeping it simple.

Public speaking is just a conversation. Get practice in through: • Asking for directions • Ordering a coffee • Asking a question • Complimenting someone Small reps scale up. Start small. Get the reps in. Build confidence.

Speaking advice I wish I had 10 years ago: • It’s not about you, it’s about your audience • Don’t script, use bullet points • Don’t be clever, be clear • Practice telling stories The most important: • Start small before scaling up

Speaking is like climbing a ladder. You get better rep by rep. You must take each rung or you risk falling. Don’t take shortcuts or use ‘hacks’. They actually take you longer. Climb the ladder one rung at a time.

Telling a story is about moments. Are you building ‘moments’ into your presentation? Here is why you should. People resonate with stories, journeys, and moments. It will help you land your message. Tell them: • Something you learned • How you changed • How you felt

When you tell your story, share the journey: • Where did you start? • How did you reach the final destination? • What did you struggle with? • What did you learn? • What do you wish you knew at the start? This is what resonates with your audience. What would you add?

Do you find public speaking stressful? 50% of speaking stress is non-speaking elements: • Will the tech work? • What if traffic makes me late? • What if it is too hot/cold? • Is there somewhere to have lunch? Remove the stress by answering these questions in your prep.

Most people prepare for public speaking in the wrong way. How? They spend time on what they are already comfortable with. Preparation should be about becoming comfortable with the unfamiliar. Not ignoring the hard parts.
