For members of the #LGBTQ community, coming out represents a critical moment in all our lives, where each of us overcomes the weight that has been on our shoulders for years or even decades.

Senator Butler’s appointment represents a significant step forward in ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table. We look forward to working with Senator Butler and her staff as we find ways to support the LGBTQ community on Capitol Hill and beyond.

As the third Black Woman to serve in the United States Senate, she gives a greater voice to those in underrepresented communities who fight every day to have their stories told.

As the first Black lesbian to serve in the upper chamber, Senator Butler represents the necessity of providing access to all LGBTQ people seeking to make change within their communities.

The LGBT CSA congratulates Senator @LaphonzaB on her recent swearing-in and wishes her the best of luck as she begins her service to the people of California and the entire nation. Her appointment to the United States Senate is nothing short of historic.
