It appears that the YPG is unwilling to hand over even a symbolically limited area and dissolve itself. This situation strengthens the likelihood of a joint Turkish–Syrian operation. Time will tell.
I expect that after Dec 20-22 (possibly delayed by a few days), the Syrian army and government will enter YPG-held areas to take over state institutions, border crossings, and military positions, although the YPG’s full integration will take at least a year. Time will tell.
