For some reason
@Harvard
has taken down Dean Gay's statement on the death of George Floyd from its original source.... but I think it is worth reflecting on today, and juxtaposing her words then with what she said today when questioned about hate speech towards Jews on campus and
It really does seem like there is a high correlation between people willing to do the paperwork to get on a Forbes 30 under 30 list and those willing to commit some form of fraud unfortunately.
Very happy to see WSJ doing work on this. Tiktok is a real national security problem / is feeding our kids (and the future of our democracy) absolute crap - and is ultimately controlled by foreign entities with a stake in us being weak. It needs to be banned.
The Fundamental Rationality of Young People Engaged in Yolo Capitalism - if you can’t earn your way into ‘the good life’ you might as well put it all on black…
There are two jewish heads of state in the entire world - Zelensky and Netanyahu... it says something that they are leading the two nations defending western liberalism in global proxy wars... against deeply illiberal regimes.
90% of scheduled zoom meeting would be dramatically better handled via an on-demand phone call. The calendar-zoom industrial complex has screwed us all.
It is nearly impossible to convince a VC of a thesis they don’t already believe, so the key in fundraising is to ‘discover’ the right partners, not try to educate and convince…
I still don't understand why
@elonmusk
didn't just personally sign all the furniture they sold from their SF office - would have easily made 10x as much.
And just to continue here -- Dean Gay's representation of Harvard, is the same Harvard that apparently warned undergrads they may be subject to disciplinary proceedings for 'sizeism,' 'fatphobia,' 'cisheterosexism,' 'ableism' :(
This is the problem with the NYT losing so much trust in their journalism / neutrality.
A jewish man is killed at a pro- palastian demonstration after being struck in the head by a megaphone by a pro Palestinian protester -- the NYT just skips that part ....
The NYT OMITS
I really don’t understand why people hate on email so much... I feel like it is nearly perfect communication medium for actually getting things done. Asynch, triage-able, seach, forces process discipline, open platform, etc
What are the top 10 American 'Unforced Errors' of the last century:
1. Stopping Nuclear - global warming unforced error
2. TSMC - national security unforced error (chip supply)
3. TIKTOK - national security (adversary opinion shaping in democracy)
4. ...
5. ...
Twitter opened in 2013 at 41.65 a share - inflation adjusted that is 51.22 today dollars (about)... going private at 54.20 -- that was a hell of a lot of work and time for $2.98
I am legit curious what will happen to tech culture if this LK-99 thing plays out and the entire GPU supply pivots to be only focused on fusion power plants, space rail guns, and batteries instead of whatever stupid applications startups are working on now.
Islamic Jihad (Hamas partner) misfires a rocket which kills dozens at one of their own hospitals
Hamas blames Israel and 10x's the death toll
NYT immediately reports
Israel then spends time to verify it wasn't them
Posts actual video evidence
People still blame Israel
Is
@elonmusk
's relationship with twitter that different than tesla in his own mind? sure he owns more of tesla (17% vs 9%) but not dramatically. in both cases he comes in non-founder investor, & then leads by making a bunch of product oriented claims on the internet ;)
1/ People who believe in 'citizen journalism' fundamentally don't understand is that the 'cost' of real information is very high. Finding new facts, and validating their truth, and carrying liability is structurally much more costly than citizens can afford alone.
Saying that plagiarism accusations shouldn't be given credence because you don't like the politics of the 'source' of the accusation vs. the evidence / substance is a WILD stand for a professor to be taking....
Caffeine... just a fabulous drug. probably the best. good for you, good for productivity and capitalism, feels good. massive scale globally, cheap. truly the drug of the modern west.
Other cultures have their drugs of choice, but the problem with those cultures is their drugs
Shameful AND a huge journalistic fail. We should assume the public web is going to be full of fake news, but when you can't even trust the times with headlines like these, we are really in trouble.
How is this the front page of
@nytimes
right now?
The only source for this right now is Hamas itself
This is one of the most important stories of the War and they rushed it
Shameful. Glad I cancelled my subscription
The NYT needs to be hauled before congress to answer for their fake news... particularly since they have been calling for tech company hearings over fake news / misinformation for the better part of the last decade.
Liberal Americans who “Support a Cease Fire but not Hamas" what is your plan exactly for getting rid of Hamas?
1. Do you expect the Palestinians to handle it and rid Gaza of Hamas themselves?
2. Do you expect Arab nations to form a coalition and handle the terrorists?
3. Do
It always blows my mind that to receive a wire you have to give someone all the information necessary to drain your bank account…. And people complain about the security of crypto. Lol.
@auren
So, to be cynical - here is the answer. The only people who can afford to take very low salary are some combination of (a) no family to support (b) young & (c) already rich. So, what you have discovered is basically a corollary to this:
Harvard Alums - I want to lean in and help the university forward, not give up. If you believe fresh ideas and leadership is needed, consider nominating me for the Board of Overseers. 🧵
The US has a ban on foreign owned media for very valid national security reasons... if it wasn't clear before, it should be crystal clear now that there should be no loophole in that for "social" media -- this is a critical national security issue / not about politics.
Everyone on TikTok needs to take a 3 day time out and read this book... don't worry it is short... And i am sorry that your education was clearly so pitiful.
I deeply admire Mark's consistent commitment to free speech.
It isn't an easy position to hold - it forces you to accept all sorts of short term costs and criticism ... But history shows it is the right long term position
Harvard needs alums that care to lean in and help the university forward. I would love your support as I run for the Harvard Board of Overseers. If you are an alum of any school please vote, and please share the word. We can make a difference vs. just giving up.
What a smoking gun - they would rather it be shut down than sold..!
If you wanted a clear confirmation that TikTok isn't run as a profit maximizing company, but is a wedge for Chinese state propaganda - here you go -
BREAKING: Chinese Communist Party propagandist and former editor-in-chief of state media says:
“Either it is ByteDance’s TikTok, or the US government might as well shut it down.”
Why is the CCP so scared over losing control of TikTok?
This is why the public market doesn't trust VC backed IPOs anymore... a whole generation of dumping trash to public market and keeping the best companies forever private. Some serious lorax s** right here
Government officials making speeches about how crypto is a ‘huge waste of resources’ is the equivalent of Tim Cook making a speech about how Android is just waste of time and money...
The percent of people I know now with covid is astronomical... I think we are in the middle of the biggest spike in covid history that is going completely unreported because people are testing at home.
Startup Founders — This Week is a Wakeup Call — Demand To Know The LPs of Your VCs; Do Not Find Yourself Accidentally Delivering Returns for People Who Spend it To Murder Civilians.
I have been saying this for years... Yolo capitalism of the young is a direct result of being priced out of traditional assets by those who have already amassed more wealth and borrowing capacity. The young rationally put all their time and labor on black.
The
@nytimes
editors are so biased against Israel it is comical... I am no fan of Netanyahu, but he is a democratically elected leader, he doesn't "rule" he leads. could you imagine the NYT saying a president of the US "rules" the country?
The Irony is that FTX Collapse is about centralized finance - not crypto / DEFI… but regulators aren’t gonna understand this which is going to create a lot of pain!
Ever since it turned out self-driving cars were going to be at least 10+ years behind claimed schedule, Silicon Valley has been searching for a place to put all is pent up breathless reverence.
Thank you GPT-3 for filling the gap.
One thing I have definitively learned from having small children: Wet wipes are an amazing product for everyone.
Far far superior to toilet paper and alternatives / just not marketed well. Clear DTC millennial subscription brand opportunity.
It is under-appreciated how critical the AWS/ 'cloud' is in COVID period. without it, none of the services that have become critical could scale up with demand, and other startups now facing zero demand couldn't turn down costs and survive (vs bleeding out on infra costs)
VCs are the ‘tenured professors’ of the startup world… and just like professors, they can use that status well or very very poorly — especially if they are young.
One lesson from the spectacular fall of two Sams: If the ownership structure of your organization requires a complicated flow chart to understand... you are probably gonna have a bad time.
