I hope everything is going ok and everybody is happier than they appear, but the coaches looking like they are sulking like naughty schoolkids on those ridiculous chairs is a quite incredible visual.

It is an extraordinary, and tragic, fact that Jack Wood, in 670 Ducks appearances, has never played a single home game in the town of Aylesbury. Yet through all of this, he has persisted. A legitimate living legend of the club. Thank you Jack, and up the Ducks! 🦆🦆🦆

It is all the more remarkable that Jack has achieved this entirely within the Read Era, a desperate 20 years which has seen the club lose its home, and with that its playing budget, a large part of its identity, and a whole generation of fans.

I would argue that no board member, player or even supporter has matched his loyalty to Aylesbury United over this period.

Ever since, whether in a great team (the Lost Covid Seasons 😢) or several very ordinary teams, Jack Wood has been ever-present in his number 4 shirt as the Ducks have maintained their Southern League status against all the odds.

This unlikely combination led Aylesbury to both promotion and the Spartan Premier Division Cup in 2013, in the club's most successful on-field season of the 21st century.

Wood - about the same height as me and a lot slimmer, but simply so good that he HAD to feature at the heart of the team - was partnered with the towering John Mulholland in central defence.

Over the next few years, as Tony Joyce slowly but surely rebuilt the squad, Jack went from a midfielder to an outstanding right back, before the Ducks truly struck gold.

In 2010, with the club in dire straits and about to be relegated from the Southern League for the first time ever, a teenage Jack Wood joined the club for the last month of the season, on loan from Luton.

When I first started regularly supporting Aylesbury in the late 90s, Cliff Hercules, in the autumn of his career, already held both the appearance and goal records, and would add to them over the next few years. It seemed unthinkable that either record could ever be surpassed.
