emo and scene were subcultures primarily practiced by lower income mentally ill and queer kids. it doesn’t hit the same today because the new versions of these subcultures tend to showcase wealth above all else.
one aspect of scene culture i don’t see talked about much is how teens of the era would hold onto and repurpose childhood belongings. scene kids today inherited invader zim and sanrio but those are chic. back then they were rocking barney, winnie the pooh, ninja turtles, whatever.
