One thing I often mess up is trying to DIY everything early on. Ideally, the order should be: 1. Use something off the shelf, 2. Work with people/companies to get your idea made, and only if 1 and 2 repeatedly fail, 3. Do your own thing.

PCB Manufacturers should have a "just send it"-option that makes them ignore all DFM questions as long as the board is manufacturable. I've been designing more obscure PCBs and every time I have to explain to them that things are weird on purpose and the files are correct.
